Happy Birthday, Captain Joshua Slocum.
Born February 20, 1844, the first man to sail single-handedly around the world.
Nova Scotia born, with family roots in New England, Captain Slocum commanded some of the finest tall ships that ever sailed the seas. On April 24, 1895, at the age of 51, he departed Boston in his sloop The Spray and sailed around the world single-handed, a passage of 46,000 miles, returning to Newport, Rhode Island, on June 27, 1898."

This 1982 built Squadrons Yachts Minuteman Catboat came to the shop for a new centerboard and some bottom work. The old bottom paint was thick, and flaking off in many places. The Centerboard in the Minuteman catboats is steel, and the one this Catboat had was original, and severely deteriorated. We fabricated a new steel centerboard, stripped the bottom paint off the hull, barrier coated the bottom, and applied fresh bottom paint.

This plywood home-built Swampscott sailing dory came to us needing some major repairs to the bow deck area. The boat had been left upside down outside for several years with the bow in contact with the ground. This repair required the deck to be removed, new sheer clamp sections scarfed in, plank sections scarfed in, the deck structure completely rebuilt, new deck plywood installed, and refiberglassing of the deck. In addition, new rubrails and foredeck toe rails were installed. After repair work was completed, the boat was repainted inside and out, and sent to its owner on Martha’s Vineyard.

Our shop built this traditional plank on frame Whitehall back in 2005. In the spring of 2022, it was brought back to the shop where we gave it renewed coat of paint and varnish for its new owner. Once the paint and varnish were done, we loaded the boat onto a 65’ sportfisher “El Jefe” in Hyannis for its delivery to Nantucket Island.

This 1979 Crosby Yacht 29’ Hawk has been in the same family since new, and the owners contacted us to have the original teak deck replaced as it was significantly worn. This project was done in two phases over two winters. The first winter we ripped up the aft section of teak decking, sub-deck, deck beams, and removed the original fuel tank. We proceeded to replaced the deck beams, installed a new aluminum fuel tank made by Luther’s in Ri, and rebuilt the sub-deck of fiberglass covered coosa board. The new teak was built in panels by Teak Decking Systems in Florida, and glued down by us. The second phase of this project was the decking on the midship bridge deck, following the same process. We also rebuilt all the deck hatches and framework, as well as installing all new deck hardware and scuppers.

This 10’ Plywood skiff was built in the 1950’s by Norwegian woodworker Einar Ohlson with help from his grandson John, so the two of them could go fishing.

John Ohlson (Einar’s grandson) now a grandfather himself, brought us the boat to be rehabbed for him to take his own grandson out fishing. The boat was stripped of all paint, plywood resealed, repairs made, and the entire boat was repainted in the original color scheme. John named the boat in honor of his grandfather.
