Been a busy few weeks keeping boats on the water. This customer was having issues with his electronics cutting in and out. Obviously this isn't what you want to see in your wiring. A failed fuel pump on this Yamaha 115 caused this customer some major headaches on the water. This mechanical fuel pump is driven by a lobe on the cam, meaning it has a pathway straight into the crank case. The internal seal failed and was pumping fuel straight into the crank case. This obviously caused a number of issues, luckily it didn't result in something worse than just the engine dying while out fishing. TowBoat U.S.Port Aransas/Corpus Christi got him safely back to the dock so we could get repairs made and get him back on the water. Having trouble with your jack plate? Bob's Machine Shop jack plates are super popular in South Texas and for good reason. They have amazing customer service, fast shipping, and sell essentially every component separately if needed. This customer had a hydraulic leak. After some checking it was determined that the reservoir had a crack and was leaking. Jumped on Bob's website ordered a new one as well as some new fittings as the old ones were looking a little rough. Customer had issues with electronics cutting out. The environment here can be tough on all kinds of components on your boat. Fresh water rinses can help keep rust and corrosion from developing on exterior components but tend to miss things like this. Troubleshooting this outboard with intermittent loss of spark. Engine would run great for about the first 5 minutes of the day, then would constantly stall out at lower speeds and even struggled to idle out of gear. Client replaced all the plugs, all the wires, both coil packs, power pack, and the optical sensor before giving us a call. First we verified the problem and determined only one bank at a time was getting spark. Through continued troubleshooting we determined the stator was the culprit. Removed the fly wheel to discover this. If you look close you can see the blackened parts where insulation has melted away. It's common for this to happen and often the problem will present or get worse once the engine is warm. Having the proper tools to test can save you lots of money on parts. Don't forget to check and grease your trailer hubs occasionally. Luckily the spindle shaft on this one wasn't too chewed up so we were able to install a new hub kit and get them back on the road home.
