Are you thinking of selling or purchasing a boat this year? Our books are open for consultations and appointments all performed by a licensed Marine Surveyor and Master Captain
A pre-purchase marine survey is a comprehensive inspection of a vessel, conducted by a qualified marine surveyor, to assess its condition and value before a potential purchase. It's reminiscent of a home inspection for a boat. Here's a breakdown of what it typically includes:
Key Components of a Pre-Purchase Marine Survey:
Hull Inspection:
- Visual inspection for damage, blisters, cracks, or delamination.
- Sounding (tapping) the hull to detect voids or weak spots.
- Moisture testing to identify potential water intrusion.
- Inspection of through-hull fittings and seacocks.
Deck Inspection:
- Inspection of the deck, cabin, and other structural components for damage or deterioration.
- Examination of railings, hatches, windows, and other fittings.
Mechanical Systems Inspection:
- Inspection of the engine(s), transmission(s), and other mechanical systems.
- Examination of fuel systems, cooling systems, and exhaust systems.
- Checks of steering and propulsion systems.
Electrical Systems Inspection:
- Inspection of wiring, batteries, and electrical panels.
- Testing of lights, pumps, and other electrical equipment.
Plumbing Systems Inspection:
- Inspection of freshwater systems, saltwater systems, and waste systems.
- Testing of pumps, tanks, and plumbing fixtures.
Safety Equipment Inspection:
- Inspection of fire extinguishers, flares, life jackets, and other safety equipment.
Sea Trial (Optional):
- Testing the vessel's performance under power.
- Checking the operation of steering, propulsion, and other systems.
-Observing the vessel's handling characteristics.
