Amsterdam by day, magical by night. Let Explore Near and Far Travel help you experience both.

Rob and I loved exploring Amsterdam in September, from its gorgeous canals and distinctive architecture to evening strolls with beautiful views from the bridges. The Royal Palace, historic canal houses, and reflections on the water make simply wandering part of the experience.

Our Anne Frank walking tour brought powerful historical perspective, while the National Holocaust Names Memorial offered a moving moment of remembrance. For a delicious stop near the Anne Frank House, we enjoyed ’t Westerhuys, with comforting Dutch split pea soup and apple pie.

Another highlight? Captain Jack’s Amsterdam canal tour. Our option included w**e and Dutch snacks, making it a relaxing way to enjoy the city’s scenery from the water. Amsterdam is a convenient gateway to Europe for United States travelers and a wonderful choice for a city stay or a pre- or post-cruise adventure. This was a cruise port stop on Virgin this time for us. Thoughtful hotel choices, convenient transportation, bicycling and experiences with meaningful inclusions can help you get more from your travel budget.

Five Virgin Voyages sailings later, Rob and I still find something new to love.

We’ve sailed to San Juan, Iceland, Scotland, Barcelona, Málaga, and Casablanca, and crossed the Atlantic. We’ve experienced Virgin both in a Rockstar Suite and in balcony cabins, so we can talk through what each experience offers when helping someone choose. The right cabin can make a real difference. We can help you choose one with motion sensitivity or noise in mind, or find a spot close to your favorite restaurant or nightclub. Those small details are part of making the cruise feel like your vacation.

I was looking through our photos and found a few favorites: us having a wonderful time on a port day, and checking out Brilliant Lady during her inaugural visit to New York City.

I’ve completed Virgin Voyages’ training and am a Certified First Mate. That training, our firsthand experience, and the Virgin team I can call on all help me plan with care and advocate for clients when plans need attention.

Reykjavík, Iceland

An idyllic building surrounded by water, with majestic mountains rising in the background, was just the beginning of an unforgettable day in Reykjavík.

We explored two of the city’s most impressive landmarks: Hallgrímskirkja, the iconic church known for its striking architecture and enormous pipe organ. The organ stands 15 meters high and contains 5,275 pipes.

We also admired Harpa Concert Hall, Reykjavík’s spectacular waterfront concert hall and conference center, famous for its colorful geometric glass façade.

Our food tour included five different stops and a wonderful selection of traditional Icelandic tastings. We tried fermented shark, Icelandic lamb that tasted remarkably like roast beef, and comforting fish stew.

We also sampled Reykjavík’s famous hot dogs, made with 80 percent beef, 10 percent pork, and 10 percent secret ingredients. They were served in about six seconds at a popular stand where the line may stretch around the block but moves remarkably quickly.

We loved the Festival of Senses, with unique pop-up experiences featuring interesting drinks, sights, and smells. And the crew? They genuinely feel like friends—warm, approachable, engaging, and always ready to share a laugh or make your day a little more special.

Akureyri, Iceland — where adventure meets incredible food!

A beautiful morning exploring the Akureyri Botanical Garden, followed by lunch at Centrum Restaurant and an absolutely amazing lobster squid-ink pasta — a dish worth traveling for!

Then it was time to head out on the water for whale watching. Yes, it was chilly, but cold water calls for warm gear — suits were provided to keep us comfortable. And the reward? Watching the grace and beauty of these majestic humpback whales in their natural environment.
