Áit Draíochta

Áit Draíochta Áit Draíochta is a space of story, sacred travel, and seasonal belonging. Haigh a chairde! Is mise Jessica Holmes. (Hello friends! I’m Jessica Holmes.)

Rooted in Irish culture, folklore, and the Celtic year, it offers an intimate pathway into the soul of Ireland—honoring land, language, and story as ways of belonging. I’m a fellow traveler with a deep passion for all things Ireland. The land of my ancestors has enchanted me for as long as I can remember. My first pilgrimage to her shores was in 2013—a once-in-a-lifetime dream trip that quickly bl

ossomed into a lifelong love affair. Since then, I’ve returned many times, immersing myself in Irish history, geography, culture, and even her native tongue. Each year, over 11 million visitors journey to this magical island. They come for many reasons—dramatic landscapes, exquisite food and drink, music, art, history, and ancestral connections. But no matter what draws them here, many find that Éire continues to call to them long after they’ve left. You are being invited to a wild, ancient, and stirring place… one that leaves no soul untouched. As Kerri Ní Dochartaigh writes in Thin Places: “Ireland is somewhere that burrows deep down, in beside the parts of you built of bone and of marrow, before you even know that you have arrived—before you even embark, perhaps.”

Áit Draíochta means Magical Place in Irish. I chose this name because it reflects both the land and the passion that inspire my work. With years of personal experience exploring all 32 counties, I combine local knowledge, love of the land, and strong organizational skills to curate unforgettable journeys. I understand how overwhelming it can be to plan your first trip abroad. Traditional travel agents often charge high fees for generic packages that don’t reflect your unique interests. I offer a more affordable, personalized alternative—because I truly love sharing this extraordinary place with others. Here’s how it works: We’ll meet (via Zoom or phone) to discuss your travel style, interests, wish list, and reasons for choosing Ireland. I’ll then design a detailed itinerary tailored to your needs, complete with maps and curated recommendations. If desired, I can assist with flights, accommodations, dining, and tours. I also offer hourly consultations for those who prefer to plan independently but need a little guidance. You’ll receive a bespoke experience that offers intimate insight into the true heart of Éire—visiting places in a profound, immersive way that fosters genuine connection. From remote and obscure gems to beloved “must-sees,” every experience is vetted for authenticity and excellence. This kind of travel is transformative. It adds something meaningful to your life. Each trip is priced individually. Your initial 30-minute consultation is complimentary. After we meet and discuss your needs, I’ll provide a cost estimate based on the time required to build your dream itinerary. You can then decide how you’d like to proceed and which services you’d like me to provide. If you’re interested or have questions, I’d love to hear from you.

Haigh a chairde—fáilte. I’m Jessi Holmes, founder of Áit Draíochta, a space devoted to story, sacred travel, and seasonal belonging. My work is rooted in the Irish diaspora experience—exploring memory, land, and the journey of return—while holding space for deep listening, healing, and reconnection with Self, Earth, and Spirit. Through writing, gatherings, and bespoke journeys to Ireland, I invite fellow seekers and wanderers into a slower, more relational way of being, grounded in story, reverence, and the rhythms of the living world.

🌄 Stairway to Heaven, Fermanagh — One of Ireland’s Most Iconic Hikes
If you’re looking for a walk that delivers serious wow-factor views, the Stairway to Heaven (officially part of the Cuilcagh Mountain Park) should be high on your list.

This famous boardwalk trail winds its way up Cuilcagh Mountain, guiding you through blanket bog, rugged terrain, and eventually up a steep wooden staircase that feels like it leads straight into the clouds.

🥾 What Makes It Special?
• The elevated boardwalk protects the landscape while making the route accessible
• Panoramic views across counties Fermanagh, Cavan, and beyond
• That final climb — the “Stairway” — is as dramatic as it gets
• A real sense of achievement when you reach the top

📍 What to Expect
The full route is around 11km return, starting from the main car park and gradually building before the steep climb near the summit. It’s not technically difficult, but it is a decent workout — especially on the way back!

💡 Tips Before You Go
• Start early — it gets busy, especially on weekends
• Wear proper footwear — it can be wet and slippery
• Bring water & snacks — there are no facilities along the trail
• Check the weather — views disappear quickly in cloud
• Parking needs to be pre-booked in peak times

🌿 Good to Know
This trail became hugely popular in recent years thanks to social media — and for good reason. It’s one of those places that genuinely lives up to the hype.
Whether you’re ticking off bucket-list hikes or just want a day out with unforgettable scenery, the Stairway to Heaven is one of those experiences you won’t forget anytime soon.

Have you done it yet… or is it still on your list? 👇

‘Muckross Head Peninsula’

Muckross, Kilcar, County Donegal, Ireland

Muckross is one of the finest headlands in Donegal, a true gem of a place. It has two small beaches named “white beach” and directly across is “beach of the noise”. To the right can be found the overseeing Muckross Hill and behind in the distance is The Slieve League cliffs mountain ridge.

Muckross Head is a prime example of earth’s tectonic forces, leaving fossil evidence that our islands crust was once very active. Muckross headland is fascinating, with its enormous almost vertical cliff face created by of millions of years of seabed geologically compressed into sandstone layers. Each layer has a distinctive colour which is packed with fossils from extinct plants & sea creatures from an era when Ireland was once a warm tropical island situated near the equator line.

Sadly over time, continental drift slowly drifted us northwards straight into the cold & rain 😆 but at least it helped create this lush green landscape we have today 💚
