Mic

hael Kuhnert is the chief pilot and owner of Bay Aviation. Michael, originally from Berlin, Germany, is a former yacht delivery captain with over 80,000 offshore miles. He began to fly in 1997, then worked as a Part 135 commercial charter pilot and earned his flight instructor certificate. He has over 7,000 hours of flight time logged, over 3000 of which come from flight instruction. Michael is a member of the Commemorative Air Force as well as the Operations Officer for the Old Dominion Squadron based in Franklin, VA. He is the instructor pilot and check pilot for the squadron’s Ryan PT-22, Fairchild F-24/J2K-2. and Stinson L-5 aircraft. Over the years Michael has provided more than a thousand passengers the unique and unforgettable experience of an open-cockpit warbird ride at his home base, Hummel Field, and at various air shows in the eastern United States. Thomas Hendrickson is a pilot and ground instructor for Bay Aviation, who also learned to fly at Bay Aviation and from Michael Kuhnert. Thomas achieved his commercial pilot’s license in April 2015 and has accumulated close to 500 hours of flight time in 10 different types of aircraft, including close to 100 hours in our PT-19. Thomas is the chief pilot for Dozier Enterprises, LLC part-time, as well as flies for the non-profit organization Pilots N’ Paws, an organization which provides flights to animals needing transportation to foster and adoptive homes. When Thomas isn’t flying, he is a special education math teacher at Toano Middle School, where he also teaches an aeronautics club, and is further pursuing a master’s degree in special education research at Old Dominion University. Delivering the Old Dominion Squadron Fairchild F-24/Coast Guard J2K from Midland, TX to Virginia in what must have been 2017. This was an overnight stopover at a small cropduster field in Arkansas. The guy was realy nice and let me stay at his place after a long evening of hangar flying. This soulful picture was taken very early on the next morning, before continuing eastward. The Fairchild proved to be a very comfortable long distance cruiser, with amenities as wide, deep cushioned leather covered seats and roll down side windows.
She made the long journey without fuss, but ended up with a flat tailwheel tire upon arrival. Fortunately then and not during a refueling stop. The aircraft had much more utility and flew better than the Ryan PT-22 it replaced in the Old Dominion Squadron fleet

With so many happy flying memories and their associated pictures, I decided to start posting some high light photographs. This one was the last formation practice with my formation partner Mo Meeker, as the Old Dominion Squadron of the CAF was abandoning on grounds of diminishing membership. I had been its ops officer and instructor/check pilot for their two aircraft, a Stinson L-5 liason aircraft and the Fairchild F-24 (or Coast Guard J2K). Mo,as usual, flew my own PT-19 in the lead, with me piloting the J2K. After this last formation practice, I flew the J2k to Culpeper, where the CAF Capital Wing took her over after I checked their pilots out in it. They still fly that aircraft today. Happy memories inded.

We are of course still offering rides and tailwheel training in the PT-19 and regular flight training from private pilot, over instrument to commercial. To check our rates, please go to our website:
