HISTORY OF LOCAL 307

The Goodyear Topeka Plant had opened in February, 1944, slowly moving into production. Goodyear worked at keeping the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) from holding elections, and was successful until February 13, 1945. The NLRB supervised the secret ballot election with maintenance and production workers who chose United Rubber, Cork, Linoleum and Plastic Workers of Ame

rica. On September 1, 1945 the United Rubber, Cork, Linoleum and Plastic Workers of America chartered the employees of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, Topeka, Kansas as URW Local 307. All was not rosy, the powerhouse chose a different bargaining agent, and the guards voted not to organize. The NLRB was called to supervise an election again in July, 1956. The employees of Prophet Foods (cafeteria) selected Local 307 as their Union. In July, 1964 additional members were added to Local 307 thru the opening of the Mid- Land Zone Distribution Center, adjacent to the Topeka Tire Plant. In July of 1995 The United Rubber, Cork, Linoleum and Plastic Workers merged with the United Steelworkers of America. In April 2005 the Paper, Allied Industrial, Chemical and Energy Workers Union (PACE) merged with the United Steelworkers of America. The new union is called the United Steel, Paper and Forestry, Rubber, Manufacturing, Energy, Allied Industrial and Service Workers International Union or the USW . We are now United Steelworkers, USW Local 307(L).

Today marked a significant milestone for our Union and Goodyear as we kicked off our first annual Trunk or Treat since the pandemic, and let me tell you, it was nothing short of wonderful! The day was brimming with unity, joy, and laughter as families gathered to celebrate. I am genuinely amazed at how much help and support we received for this event. It reminded us all of the strength and spirit that our community has, even after a couple of tough years.

First and foremost, I want to give a massive shoutout to all the volunteers who made this event happen. Your hard work, dedication, and commitment were truly the backbone of our Trunk or Treat. We had volunteers from our Plant Optimization teams, various committees at the union hall & Goodyear. We also had several enthusiastic Halloween lovers who generously donated both their spooktacular decorations and their time. It's amazing to see everyone come together for the greater good, and your efforts did not go unnoticed!

This year, the honor of taking home the coveted 2024 Trunk or Treat trophy went to the safety pillar — the People, Environmental & Care Pillar (Safety) team, consisting of Joe Mahoney, Rachael Sonnier, Leon Sylvester, and Jeremy Brown. A heartfelt congratulations to this fantastic trio for their creativity and effort! Their trunk truly captured the spirit of Halloween and showcased how important safety is within our community.

Overall, the day was perfect! From the laughter of children to the camaraderie shared among friends and families, it felt fantastic to reconnect after years of feeling somewhat stagnant due to the pandemic. This event not only provided a chance for Halloween fun but also served as a reminder of how important community is, especially in challenging times.

A special thank you goes out to the United Steelworkers (USW) and Goodyear for their generous donations that helped make this trunk or treat a reality. Without your support, we wouldn’t have had the resources needed to create such an amazing experience for everyone.

In closing, I feel incredibly grateful for the bustling community spirit we experienced today. It was a joy to see so many smiling faces, both young and old, enjoying the festivities. Here’s to many more annual Trunk or Treats filled with fun and togetherness! Until next year, everybody! 🎃

The 17th Annual Bernie Tourney golf tournament, hosted by Bernie Deghand American Legion Post 423, was held on Saturday, October 12, 2024 at Holton Country Club. One of the Silver Level sponsors was USW 307L and the Veterans of Steel. Current and retired Steelworkers were on the staff for the tournament, including Bernie Deghand Post 423 members Steve Devlin (retired), dept. 5454; Jim Seematter (retired), dept. 5451; Patrick Murphy, dept. 2563; and Jaye Jones, dept. 5452. Gary Helmick, dept. 1052 and Sonia Jones, dept. 5451 are officers of the Goodyear Veterans Association, as well as being USW 307L members.

The Bernie Tourney is named after Master Sergeant Bernie Deghand who was KIA near Spera, Afghanistan on 15SEP2006 while training Afghan Army troops in mechanized infantry tactics using armored personnel carriers. MSG Deghand served in the KS Army Nation Guard with duty stations in Holton, Topeka, and Leavenworth. Several of his colleagues start the golf tournament as a way to honor Bernie’s memory and help his children. It has become a means of outreach and support to the veteran community plus the scholarship fund of Bernie Deghand Post 423 in Mayetta, which aids throughout Northeast Kansas.

Goodyear-Topeka was a Bronze Level sponsor and supported the participation officers of the Goodyear Veterans Association

This holiday season, the Veterans of Steel Committee is proud to announce its partnership with Toys for Tots, a program dedicated to providing gifts to children in need. This reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting our community and ensuring that every child experiences the joy of the holiday season. Through this partnership, we aim to collect toys that will be distributed to local families, spreading cheer and warmth during a time that can often be challenging for many.

We invite all members of our union and the surrounding community to contribute to this worthy cause. Donations can be made at our Local 307 union office or at the main and south entrances of the Goodyear plant. Your generous gifts will help brighten the lives of children who may otherwise go without this holiday season.
