🔶K-68 project to begin next week in Osage County

The Kansas Department of Transportation will begin a 12-mile mill and overlay project in Osage County on Monday, June 15. Resurfacing work will take place on K-68, from U.S. 75 to the K-268 junction north of Quenemo.

Traffic will be restricted to one lane and directed by a pilot car and flaggers where crews are actively working. Drivers should plan for delays of up to 15 minutes.

A 12-foot width restriction will also be in place through the work zone.

Work will occur during daylight hours Monday through Friday and is expected to be complete by the end of July, conditions permitting.

APAC-Kansas Inc. Shears Division, of Hutchinson, is the prime contractor for the $1.5 million project.

KDOT urges motorists to stay alert and follow posted signs in all work zones. For current road conditions, visit KanDrive.gov or call 511. For updates on highway projects in northeast Kansas, visit ksdot.gov/NortheastNews.

🗓️KDOT hosting open houses for U.S. 24 corridor study in Riley, Pottawatomie counties

The Kansas Department of Transportation will host two open houses to provide information on the U.S. 24 Corridor Management Plan (CMP) in Riley and Pottawatomie counties.

Both open houses will present the same information, and KDOT project team members will be available to answer questions and gather public input. No formal presentations will be given; attendees may come and go at any time during the events.

Meeting times and locations:
• Monday, June 22, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.: Wamego Senior & Community Center, 501 Ash Street in Wamego
• Tuesday, June 23, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.: CiCo Park – Pottorf Hall, 1710 Avery Avenue in Manhattan

The proposed CMP will update the 2009 Pottawatomie County study that evaluated U.S. 24 from Manhattan to Wamego; and extend the study corridor north to the U.S. 77/U.S. 24 junction in Riley County.

The plan will evaluate current and future traffic operations in Riley and Pottawatomie counties and identify potential improvements to enhance safety and efficiency along the corridor.

Information presented at the open houses will be available on the project website on Monday, June 22. The public can also complete a survey and submit comments through July 8 by visiting ksdot.gov/US24-Riley-Pott.

Persons needing special assistance or accommodation to attend the meeting or would like to request alternative formats of meeting materials, can email [email protected].

🔶🔶Short-term closures updated on PQV project in Topeka

The Kansas Department of Transportation has made scheduling adjustments to project work and closure plans on the I-70 Polk-Quincy Viaduct (PQV) project.

As previously announced, I-70 between Topeka Boulevard and 8th Avenue is scheduled to fully close at approximately 12:01 a.m. on Monday, June 8. Plans for removal of the existing viaduct have been adjusted, and the temporary closures on Kansas Avenue, Topeka Boulevard and I-70 have been revised. Motorists should plan for the following:
• Sunday, June 7, from 7 p.m. until work is complete on Wednesday, June 10: Kansas Avenue will be closed between 1st and 3rd streets. Traffic can follow the detour on 3rd Street, Topeka Boulevard and N.W. Morse Street.
• Friday, June 12, from 11 p.m. until Monday, June 15, at 4 a.m.: Topeka Boulevard will be closed between 1st and 3rd streets. Through traffic can follow the detour on 3rd Street, Kansas Avenue and N.W. Morse Street. During this closure:
o Southbound Topeka Boulevard will have access to the westbound I-70 on-ramp. Northbound Topeka Boulevard will be directed to 6th Street and MacVicar Avenue to access westbound I-70.
o Eastbound I-70 will also be closed starting at MacVicar Avenue. Eastbound motorists can follow the local detour: MacVicar Avenue to 6th Avenue to Topeka Boulevard to the 10th Avenue I-70 on-ramp.

After Topeka Boulevard has reopened as scheduled, the closure on eastbound I-70 starting at MacVicar Avenue has been revised and will now remain in place until Sunday, June 28, to allow pavement work and storm sewer installations. The detour listed above will be posted for eastbound motorists during this closure.

A closure on 4th Street has also been added between Madison and Monroe streets. The area will close on Tuesday, June 16, and remain closed until late fall. Marked detours will direct motorists around the closure area.

Demolition of the existing viaduct will occur during daytime and nighttime hours and is expected to take approximately three weeks. Explosives will not be used for the process. Rather, heavy equipment will be used to break apart and remove the structure. Spectators are asked to keep a safe distance outside the project limits when demolition work is taking place.

Additional reductions, closures and other traffic impacts will be necessary as the project progresses.

All project work and traffic changes are conditions permitting and subject to change.

More information about the PQV project can be found at ksdot.gov/I-70-Polk-Quincy.

KDOT urges motorists to stay alert and follow posted signs in all work zones. For current road conditions, visit KanDrive.gov or call 511. For updates on highway projects in northeast Kansas, visit ksdot.gov/NortheastNews.
