This month, we are proud to recognize Ronnie Seymore as Scales Express Inc.'s Driver of the Month! With years of experience and a deep passion for the industry,Ronnie embodies dedication, professionalism, and a true go-getter spirit. Here’s what he had to share about his journey as a truck driver.
Personal & Professional Background
Q: How long have you been driving, and what inspired you to become a truck driver?
A: Trucking has been a lifelong passion for me. I’ve wanted to do this since I was a child. At one point, I even owned five trucks myself, but I stepped away when the economy took a turn. What brought me back? The livable hours and my love for the road.
Q: What challenges have you faced as a truck driver, and how do you overcome them?
A: One of the biggest challenges is dealing with cars cutting in front of you without consideration for truck drivers. But I’ve always been a go-getter—no problem getting up and going to work. I know what needs to be done, and I get it done.
Q: Do you have any tips for new drivers just starting in the industry?
A: Absolutely. New drivers need more hands-on training. I’d recommend longer ride-alongs—at least a week. You’d be surprised how many drivers struggle with backing up a truck. And most importantly, listen. Learning from experienced drivers is key to success.
Q: How do you balance work and family life as a truck driver?
A: For me, it’s easy—I'm not married, and my kids are grown!
Life on the Road
Q: What’s your go-to road trip snack or favorite meal on the road?
A: I like to keep it healthy—protein drinks, fruits, and nuts.
Q: Do you listen to music, podcasts, or audiobooks while driving? If so, what are your favorites?
A: Sometimes, I’ll listen to motivational speakers or catch up on the news.
Q: If you could drive your truck anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: Miami, Florida—no question about it!
We’re grateful to have dedicated drivers like Ronnie on our team. Congratulations again on being named Scales Express Inc.'s February Driver of the Month! Keep up the great work, and stay safe on the road!

Gov. Kemp Declares Statewide State of Emergency Ahead of Winter Weather

ATLANTA – Governor Brian P. Kemp today declared a statewide State of Emergency, effective immediately through Tuesday, January 14, 2025, in preparation for the approaching winter storm expected to impact Georgia beginning this Friday.

The State of Emergency authorizes the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA/HS) to activate the State Operations Center (SOC) and mobilize any needed resources to address potential impacts. GEMA/HS, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), the Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS), and other state agencies are instructed to provide essential personnel to the SOC, which will move to a Level 2 Activation beginning tonight at 7 p.m.

"The Georgia Department of Transportation, along with the Department of Public Safety, began treating roads early this morning to prepare for the approaching winter storm, and I'm asking all Georgians to help them do their jobs by limiting travel as much as possible in the coming days,” said Governor Brian Kemp. “Hazardous conditions, including ice and snow, can develop quickly and make travel very dangerous. Plan ahead and stay tuned to updates from state and local officials to ensure you and your loved ones remain safe while our first responders continue to work tirelessly throughout this weather event."

Among other provisions, the State of Emergency order prohibits price gouging; suspends hours-of-service limitations for commercial vehicle operators involved in response activities; and temporarily increases weight, height, and length limits for commercial vehicles transporting essential supplies.

Current Weather Forecast:
• A significant winter weather event will unfold across North and Central Georgia tomorrow with impacts lingering into Saturday.
• A mix of rain, freezing rain, sleet, and snow will begin to move into western Georgia by sunrise on Friday, overspreading much of North and Central Georgia throughout the morning.
• This wintry mix will continue through Friday afternoon and evening before diminishing early Saturday morning. The greatest impacts are expected along and north of the I-20 Corridor, although snow and/or ice accumulations are possible as far south as Columbus and Macon.
• A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for 59 counties for Friday morning through Saturday morning. This Watch will be upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning or a Winter Weather Advisory this afternoon and could be expanded to include more counties in Central Georgia.
• Snow and sleet accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are forecast for North Georgia with up to 2 inches of snow and sleet in Metro Atlanta and points to the east. Ice accumulations of one-tenth to one-quarter of an inch will also be possible in the Watch/Warning area.
• Counties in Central Georgia placed under a Winter Weather Advisory should expect lesser amounts but enough to still cause inconveniences.
• Travel conditions will deteriorate with the onset of wintry precipitation Friday morning, and roads may remain hazardous on Saturday. Temperatures will be near or below freezing between the onset of wintry precipitation Friday morning all the way through sunset on Saturday.
• With winds increasing on Saturday, any remaining snow and ice could bring down trees and powerlines.
• Temperatures will drop into the lower 20s on Saturday night across North and Central Georgia, so any remaining moisture will refreeze by Sunday morning. Sunday afternoon temperatures should reach the 40s.
• Please make final preparations today before the precipitation moves in tomorrow morning.
• As always, stay tuned to forecast updates from your local National Weather Service office and reliable media outlets.

State Action and Preparation:
GDOT vehicles and crews have begun brining roads this morning, particularly in areas north of and along I-20. Residents are encouraged to avoid travel in the most impacted areas, if at all possible. If travel is necessary, motorists should give plenty of space and clearance to allow GDOT crews to continue to treat and clear roads as needed for the safety of the traveling public.

The Motor Carrier Compliance Division has partnered with GDOT to es**rt brining details across the metro area into northern Georgia to the Tennessee line. DPS Troopers and Officers will be on standby across the state for any service calls regarding the winter weather and the needs of the state.

Winter Weather Preparedness Guidance:
Residents should check with their local officials for information about warming centers and comfort station locations. State parks with warming centers can be found here. More tips are as follows:
• Use electric space heaters with automatic shut-off switches.
• Keep heat sources at least three feet away from furniture and drapes.
• Insulate your home and ensure doors and windows are sealed.
• Check and install a working carbon monoxide detector.
• Have backup heat sources like extra blankets, sleeping bags, or a wood-burning fireplace.
• Check your antifreeze, brakes, heater, tires, and wipers.
• Keep your gas tank at least half full.
• Carry an emergency Ready kit with items like a portable phone charger, ice scraper, extra blanket, sand for traction, and jumper cables.
• Use generators outdoors and at least 20 feet from doors, windows, or vents to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
• Allow pipes to drip or insulate them to prevent freezing.
• Keep pets indoors and check on elderly or disabled relatives and neighbors.

For more winter weather preparedness tips, visit gema.georgia.gov/winter.
GEMA/HS will provide ongoing updates regarding winter weather conditions via its website (gema.georgia.gov) and social media accounts. Residents are encouraged to monitor local National Weather Service updates and news stations.

🚛 Stay Safe on the Road: Top Tips for Avoiding Distractions While Driving 🚛

Distractions behind the wheel increase crash risk. Here are simple ways to stay focused while driving a commercial motor vehicle (CMV):
1️⃣ Ignore Outside Distractions: Stay focused on driving, not billboards or passersby.
2️⃣ No Texting While Driving: Texting takes your eyes, hands, and mind off the road—don’t risk it!
3️⃣ Avoid Dispatching Devices: Treat dispatching devices as "texting for truckers"—handle tasks before driving.
4️⃣ Skip Snacking: Eating or drinking behind the wheel can take your hands and focus off driving.
5️⃣ Hands-Free Phones Only: Dialing handheld phones is illegal and dangerous. Use hands-free options if necessary.

🚦 Your focus on the road ensures safety for everyone—stay alert and distraction-free! 🛑

Attitude of Gratitude

As we gather together with family and friends to celebrate Thanksgiving let our hearts be filled with gratitude.

The dictionary defines gratitude as follows:
1. The state of being grateful, thankfulness.
2. The state of being grateful, warm and friendly feeling toward a benefactor, kindness awakened by a favor received
3. The state of being grateful.

We are grateful for God the Father sending his only so to earth to die on the cross so that we can be born again receiving the free gift of salvation and
eternal life.

These 5 Bible verses speak to gratitude.

Gratitude is not optional

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Gratitude is meant to infuse every aspect of your life

Colossians 3:17
And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him

Expressing Gratitude

Philippians 4:6-7
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God,
which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Lens of Gratitude - becoming more aware of blessings that often go unnoticed

James 1:17
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.

Cultivating Gratitude

Hebrews 12:28
Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.

Lastly I leave with you with a prayer of Thanksgiving from Psalm 103:1-5

Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits; Who forgives all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from destruction, who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, who satisfies your mouth with
good things, so that your youth is renewed line the eagle’s.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Celebrating Scales Express Driver of the Month: Penny Monk!

We’re thrilled to announce Penny Monk as Scales Express’s Driver of the Month!

Since joining us in March 2021, Penny has been a driving force in our team, logging an impressive 587,974 miles with dedication and skill. When asked what she loves about driving, Penny shared, “The freedom. No one is hanging over your head. You have your own life to do your own job.” This independence on the road keeps her focused and motivated.

While she enjoys the freedom, Penny admits that one challenge is dealing with other drivers who don’t always understand or respect trucks. However, her patience and professionalism shine through every mile.

As for Scales Express, Penny couldn’t be more enthusiastic, calling it the best company she’s ever worked for. She even moved to Iowa for a time but returned to Scales because of the incredible team. “The people are great to work with!” she said, underscoring the community that keeps her here.

We’re incredibly grateful to have Penny on our team. Her advice for fellow drivers is timeless: treat others how you want to be treated.

Congratulations, Penny! Thank you for your hard work and dedication! 👏

11/12/2024

Backing up a truck is one of the most dangerous - and potentially expensive - maneuvers that truckers can do and can be overcome by the use of extra care and caution.

Backing events require extreme caution

Backing accidents are the most frequent type of accidents in all of trucking
If you must back up, GET OUT AND LOOK
Check for proper clearance on all six sides: up, down, left, right, front, and rear
Continue to GET OUT AND LOOK multiple times
Don’t just think you’re clear, KNOW you’re clear: GET OUT AND LOOK
Using a ground guide to assist is always a good idea
Even with assistance, it is the driver’s responsibility to not strike anything
GET OUT AND LOOK, even if a dozen people are flagging you back
Severe consequences may result from improper/ unsafe backing
Backing into a fixed object, moving object and/or person
Backing over a fixed object, moving object and/or person
Pinning a person
According to the National Safety Council, 1 out of 4 vehicle accidents can be attributed to poor backing techniques.
Backing accidents cause 500 deaths and 15,000 injuries per year.
While You Are Backing

Back from the driver’s side
Minimize the distance you need to back. The less ground you cover in reverse; the less chances you will have striking a fixed object.
Have patience & don’t rush
No one ever made up time by backing quickly. Take a deep breath and commit yourself to perfect backing with no compromises.
Slow movement helps you maintain full control of your vehicle and to correctly judge distances.
Check all sides as you back
Remember that there are 6 sides to your vehicle (back, front, both sides, above and below).
Keep your eyes moving to ensure conditions have not changed.
Use all of your resources and guides
Use a spotter if someone is available. Be sure to keep your spotter in sight at all times.
Make sure your mirrors are clean and in good positions to maximize the view around your vehicle – Know your blind spots!
Roll down your window and listen to the environment around you.
If you are unsure, G.O.A.L.
If you begin backing and become unsure of your surroundings, get out and look again!
