Selmon Construction Updates

The Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA) will increase the capacity of the existing Lee Roy Selmon Expressway to 6-lanes (one additional lane in each direction) to help meet anticipated growth. The South Selmon Capacity Project will address current and future congestion challenges, enhance roadway safety and help keep cut-through traffic off Bayshore Boulevard and other neighborhood roads. THEA is committed to engaging in ongoing communication with neighborhood residents, businesses, and community stakeholders.

: Nightly right lane and shoulder closures are scheduled on the EB and WB Selmon Expressway, as part of the South Selmon Capacity Project.

🚧 EB / WB Right Lane and Right Shoulder on Selmon SR 618 (W Euclid Ave. to W Bay-to-Bay limits)

: Updated Traffic Pattern on Brorein and Tampa Streets will begin as early as October 20.

Here's what to expect:

📍 This traffic pattern will remain in place for approximately two years while work continues on the Selmon Expressway

Drill shaft work begins as early as October 9 along the embankment just south of the Selmon Expressway between South Hyde Park Ave. and South Blvd.

This work is expected to take 3–5 days and will run 8 AM–5 PM.

No closures are expected during this work.

Before construction begins at Joseph Frye Park in Downtown Tampa, THEA crews carefully removed shrubs and plantings so they can be replanted elsewhere.

Parks like this matter to our community, so we save trees and vegetation wherever we can. Restoring the landscape is part of the project and our long-term commitment to environmental stewardship.

💧 What Is a Dry Pond?

Dry ponds play an important role in managing stormwater.

These areas are designed to temporarily hold excess rainwater after a storm, helping control runoff and reduce the risk of flooding. Ponds gradually drain so they are ready for the next storm.

Several parking lots near Benchmark International are currently closed while crews continue work on the South Selmon Capacity Project.

Keeping You Informed: Ramp Upgrades

As part of the South Selmon Capacity Project, THEA will upgrade ramps throughout the corridor. Here's what to expect:

Longer merge areas – Extending the merge distance gives entering traffic more room and time to safely reach mainline speed, helping ease backups near on/off ramps.
Added lanes – Additional capacity keeps traffic moving more reliably.
Neighborhood protection – A more reliable expressway means less incentive for drivers to cut through neighborhood streets.

Drill shaft work has begun at several downtown Tampa locations. Before work begins, crews install black construction fencing around construction zones.

Here's what's involved:

📍 Setting up a secure work area
📍 Drilling the shaft
📍 Placing a steel reinforcement cage
📍 Pouring concrete to form the foundation
