Cruise ships have gotten a lot of criticism lately after the recent hantavirus news story, and I’ve seen the same comments again and again about cruise ships being “floating Petri dishes.” But here’s something many people don’t realize:

Cruise lines are actually the only sector in the travel and hospitality industry that are federally required to report certain illnesses to the CDC. Hotels, resorts, airlines, theme parks, and most other travel sectors are not held to the same reporting standards. That’s a huge reason why you hear about cruise ship outbreaks more often.

And contrary to popular belief, cruise ships account for only about 1% of all reported norovirus outbreaks in the United States. The other 99%? You rarely hear about those on the news.

Cruise ships are also subject to surprise inspections through the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program, with many ships consistently scoring 97–100 out of 100. (Yes, those inspection scores are public and searchable online!)

Because cruise lines are held to such strict sanitation and reporting standards, they are honestly one of the cleanest and most monitored ways to travel.

I’m no epidemiologist, but it does make you wonder how often illnesses are actually contracted at airports, on airplanes, in hotels, or during pre-cruise travel… then symptoms appear onboard and the cruise gets the blame.

Call me biased as a cruise lover and travel advisor, but I just wanted to share a little perspective and education around the topic 🛳️
