☀️⚓️ Summer Boating in Tampa Bay? Let’s Keep It Safe and Fun!
Tampa Bay is one of the best places to boat in Florida, but our hot, humid summers bring afternoon thunderstorms, strong sun, and busy waters. Here are essential tips to prepare for a safe season on the water:
1. Check the Weather & Plan Smart
Florida weather changes fast — especially those pop-up thunderstorms. Check the marine forecast, radar, and tides before leaving. Go out early in the day and have a plan to head back at the first sign of lightning or dark clouds. Monitor VHF Channel 16 for updates.
2. Life Jackets Are Non-Negotiable
Make sure you have a properly fitted, USCG-approved life jacket for every person on board (required by law). Kids under 6 must wear one on vessels under 26 feet. Best practice: Wear them at all times, especially with kids or when conditions get rough. Most drownings happen because people weren’t wearing one.
3. Designate a Sober Skipper
Alcohol and boating don’t mix. About a quarter of boating accidents involve alcohol or drugs. Choose a designated sober operator and save the drinks for after you’re safely docked.
4. Perform a Pre-Departure Checklist
• Test your engine, bilge pump, lights, and horn
• Check fuel, battery, and flares/fire extinguishers
• Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, and a first aid kit
• File a float plan with someone on shore (who, where, when you’ll return)
5. Watch for Local Hazards
• Stay clear of the main shipping channel — huge cargo ships have the right of way and are hard to maneuver.
• Respect no-wake and manatee zones (slow down and keep your distance from wildlife).
• Be aware of shallow areas, changing tides, and possible red tide conditions.
• Maintain a proper lookout — 360° awareness prevents collisions.
6. Sun & Hydration Protection
Stay hydrated (bring extra water and water-rich snacks), use reef-safe sunscreen, and take breaks in the shade. Heat exhaustion hits hard out on the water.
7. Know Your Boat & the Rules
Familiarize yourself with local speed zones, markers, and navigation. If you’re new to Tampa Bay, consider a local boater education course.
8. EPIRB EPIRB EPIRB!!!
Bonus: Get a free Vessel Safety Check from the U.S. Coast Guard or FWC — they’ll inspect your gear at no cost.
