We are heading in the right direction. After being in a freight recession for quite some time, it’s a positive sign that the market may finally be starting to pull its way back.

That said, the cost of doing business across the trucking industry is still through the roof, so there is still a long way to go before things truly normalize.

For now, though, up is a lot better than down.

Monthly data from Cass Information Systems showed truckload rates continued to climb in February, even as freight volumes remained pressured.

We are feeling it for sure. Capacity is tight and we are able to get great rates for the drivers willing to go out on the road.

Truckload carrier Marten Transport reported earnings for the fourth quarter that reflected the first stirrings of freight market economics improvement that were evident at the end of 2025.

These “nuclear verdicts” continue to pile up and are a major factor behind rising insurance costs across the industry. Even safe carriers with strong safety records end up sharing in the increased premiums as the market absorbs these losses. At the same time, shippers are still pushing to keep transportation costs down. The industry feels like it’s at a breaking point, and this is one of many signs that the freight recession may be nearing a turning point.
