Good food has a way of bringing people together, and aboard the MV Marlee Mae Devall, Deckhand John Nichols is serving up a crew favorite—jambalaya.

Whether it's sharing a meal after a long day or passing down a recipe that's been perfected over time, cooking is one of the many ways our crews build camaraderie and make life on the water feel a little more like home.

Special thanks to vetting inspector Michael Huerta for capturing this moment aboard the MV Marlee Mae Devall.

Not everyone gets a front-row seat to views like this. For our crews, the waterways aren't just where we work. They are a reminder of the beauty, responsibility, and privilege that come with serving our customers every day.

Thank you to Relief Captain Alton Verdin Jr. for capturing and sharing these incredible New Orleans views from the MV Kathryn T Devall.

This month we are proud to recognize MV Old Hickory Pilot Jacob Lay for 15 years of service and dedication to Southern Devall.
“I came straight to Devall right out of high school and worked my way up from deckhand to tankerman to pilot. This job has taught me how to be a leader, a cook, and even improve my mechanic skills. Most importantly, it has given me the opportunity to provide a great life for my family and meet a lot of great people along the way.”
Along the way, he learned from great captains, developed new skills, and built a career on the river through hard work and determination.

Thank you Jacob for your years of service, leadership, and commitment to Southern Devall. We look forward to the journey ahead!

A special moment on the waterways: After decades with Southern Devall, Capt. Scott Guidry stepped into the wheelhouse of the MV Capt. Scott Guidry — the vessel named in his honor. A fitting tribute to a career built on dedication, experience, and a lifetime of service on the river.
