For 2026, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), in partnership with the FMCSA and DOT, has scheduled several high-visibility inspection "blitzes." These initiatives are designed to reinforce safety standards across North America.
The most significant event is the International Roadcheck, but there are several other targeted weeks you should have on your radar.
1. International Roadcheck (The "Big One")
Dates: May 12–14, 2026
Duration: 72 hours
Primary Inspection: North American Standard Level I (a 37-step comprehensive check).
2.Operation Safe Driver Week
Dates: July 12–18, 2026
Focus: Driver Behavior.
What to expect: Law enforcement will increase patrols specifically looking for speeding, distracted driving (cell phone use), improper lane changes, and failure to wear seatbelts. This initiative applies to both commercial and passenger vehicle drivers.
3. Brake Safety Week
Dates: August 23–29, 2026
Focus: Brake Systems and Components.
What to expect: Inspectors will look for missing, non-functioning, loose, or cracked parts in the brake system.
Unannounced Brake Safety Day: In addition to this week, there will be a one-day unannounced brake inspection blitz at some point earlier in the year.
Other 2026 Initiatives
Human Trafficking Awareness Initiative:
U.S.: January 12–16, 2026
Canada: February 23–27, 2026
Mexico: March 16–20, 2026
Hazardous Materials/Dangerous Goods Road Blitz: An unannounced 5-day blitz targeting the compliance of HM/DG shipments.
To avoid being placed Out-of-Service during these periods, consider these steps:
Audit your ELD: Ensure your device is not on the FMCSA’s "Revoked" list and that all unassigned driving time is annotated.
Check Tie-downs: Inspect straps for frays and chains for nicks. Ensure you have the correct number of tie-downs for the weight of your load.
Pre-Trip Everything: During Roadcheck, inspectors conduct nearly 15 inspections per minute. A thorough pre-trip is your best defense.
