EAA Chapter 571 had the privilige to host Lisa Turner as our speaker last night! It was a great presentation and discussion. Lisa talked about EAA builder resources including Techical Councelors, her own story and a bit about the 3 books she has written.
Lisa is an aerospace manufacturing engineer, has been member of the EAA for 25 years and serves as a Technical Counselor, Flight Advisor, A&P, and DAR. Lisa writes the Airworthy column for Sport Aviation Magazine and writes freelance for Kitplanes magazine. She has published mulitple books, including Dream Take Flight, about a young girl overcoming shyness as she pushes back on the conventional roles for females in the 1960s. An admitted tomboy, she didn’t understand why she couldn’t take shop class or be a mechanic.
“At the time, I didn’t realize I was off the beaten path for girls. That’s probably what gave me the courage to persevere,” says Lisa.
Lisa ended up building an airplane in her garage at the age of 45. Her family thought she was crazy, and said so. In the years that followed, the airplane brought Lisa the confidence she was searching for. Both a physical and spiritual journey, a 4,000 mile solo in the airplane brings adventure and triumph. Unconventional in her choice of careers, Lisa has worked as a finish carpenter on high rise construction, run her own bicycle shop, started and ran a business consultancy, was the Chief Training Officer for Tyco Fire and Security Services, and is FAA licensed as an Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic. Lisa and her husband, Jerry Stadtmiller, run an antique airplane restoration facility in Andrews, North Carolina, called BIPE, which stands for "biplane."
Thanks, Lisa for joining us!
