Customer stated the motor would shift but the lower unit wouldn’t actually go into gear… wellllll we found the problem 😂⚓

This lower unit officially has what we call a “disco party” going on inside 🪩💀

Metallic gear oil, metal flakes, and enough glitter in the drain pan to start a craft project. Motor itself runs great, but the gears and bearings down below are definitely not having a good time anymore.

If your lower unit starts:
👉 whining
👉 grinding
👉 clunking
👉 slipping out of gear
👉 not engaging properly
👉 or leaking water into the gear oil

DON’T ignore it and keep running it. Catching it early can save a whole lot of money before gears and bearings completely self destruct.

A BOAT MECHANIC’S PRAYER

The world wants convenience now.
Drop it off. Call somebody else. Replace it instead of repair it.

But they forgot about the men who keep things running when everyone else gives up on them.

The boat mechanic knows different.

Because at daylight, before most people are awake, the shop lights are already on. Cold mornings. Grease on your hands. Salt in the air. An outboard torn apart in front of you while the customer is counting on you to figure it out.

No shortcuts. No excuses.

Just experience, patience, and the willingness to stay with the problem until it’s solved.

You chase wiring faults nobody else could find.
You fight frozen bolts, corrosion, broken studs, bad fuel systems, burnt impellers, and engines that should’ve quit years ago.

And somehow, you bring them back to life.

Not because it’s easy.
Because it’s yours to fix.

A boat mechanic’s prayer isn’t for an easy workload.

It’s for steady hands when the pressure is high.
For wisdom to diagnose what others missed.
For strength when the days get long and the shop stays full.
For honesty in the work and pride in doing it right.

Because every repaired boat means a father gets another day on the water with his kids.
Another fisherman makes it home safe.
Another family gets memories they wouldn’t have without that engine firing back up.

That’s the mission.

Not for lighter burdens.
But for stronger backs.
Sharper minds.
And the determination to finish every job the right way.

One thing I’ll always appreciate is when customers tell me they chose Cumberland Marine because of the way they were treated and the reputation we’ve built.

🔧⚓ Another busy day at the shop

Spent part of the day digging into a Mercury 225 with a “won’t take throttle on the water” complaint. Found wrong spark plugs installed, a loose oil hose on the side of the block, and plenty of spliced wiring throughout the harness. Oil level warning light issue is looking more and more like a harness/wiring problem. On the hose the motor runs and revs fine both in and out of gear, so this one may need an on-water test by the customer to fully duplicate the issue.

Also pulled in an Evinrude 70 4 stroke that “wasn’t peeing” after the customer had already installed a new water pump and thermostat. Found RTV around the thermostat, the woodruff key out of place in the lower unit, and a few other issues needing attention. Got water flowing again though 💪

Now onto the next Evinrude for carb cleaning, battery replacement, trailer winch replacement, and either today or tomorrow tackling a broken tilt assist cylinder cable repair.

This is why proper diagnostics matter. Sometimes it’s not one issue, it’s years of little problems, shortcuts, and wiring repairs stacking up over time.

Had a customer bring in a Yamaha 4 stroke that had just been serviced somewhere else. He said it didn’t start running rough and cutting off until after the service was done.

Took a look and found the fuel/water separator hadn’t been replaced… and the wrong spark plugs were installed.

Details matter. The small things can make a big difference in how these motors run and can leave you stranded if they’re overlooked.

If your boat isn’t running right after a service, don’t ignore it… get it checked.
