Corn is tucked in nicely ready to grow, beans are poking through the ground as I thumb this, all of the pre-emergent herbicides have been sprayed. Now if we could just get the field borders sprayed and then get some where between 0.5-2” of rain in the next 2 weeks… An inch of rain per week through July would be wonderful, we don’t need 10” in 12 hours like in ‘23, or 3” a week for 3 weeks like ‘24. Fun Fact! Corn will use 0.35” of water per day at it peak rate during the Silk R2 stage, Soybeans peak at nearly the same rate 0.33”/day during their Early pod fill RS stage -according to The Ohio State University. In our area of SW Minnesota, those stages are in late July-early August. In ‘24 we did not receive a measurable amount of rain from mid June through the end of September, that means the plants had to try and find 0.33”/8960 gals/32,895 liters per acres of moisture everyday from the soil everyday through their peak demand!

Got the beans planted, sprayed, and rolled before the rain this past weekend. We’ll find out if it was right or wrong to start with beans this year. I was a little nervous with how cold it was this morning but the beans haven’t came out of the ground yet!

Last year the damage was visable from running over rows with the preemerge chemical pass. This year we are going to try this used set of floater tires to eliminate that problem!

Today’s the day! We sold the Kuhn 4850 and acquired a Case 875. It’s amazing how much of a difference rain can make when it comes to fall tillage. We wrapped up most of our tillage at the end of the draught, ground was hard, took 600 hp to pull this ripper, now we’ve gotten a few inches of nice soaking rains and Nick pulled this ripper last night with the 370 hp fwa… “definitely no high speed here” -Nick last night as he was finishing up some custom work for a few cousins.

Just my 2¢ of advice for everyone headed to the MN Poll booths tomorrow; Gov Tim Walz declared an eminent domain across the state just 5 years ago. He decided it was the land of rocks and cows that was ruining this country’s rivers and water. 1% of the country’s population was responsible for majority of the Mississippi Delta contamination for example. He forced land owners to turn thousands of acres out of productive farm ground into buffer strips to protect MN waters and offer him and his buddies more birds and land to hunt on. Tomorrow we will be faced with a double threat: Walz/Flanagan and a constitutional amendment. For those of you who think this would be a great way to get Walz out of office, please do your own research on his replacement Peggy Flanagan. If you haven’t heard of the constitutional amendment vote; MN wants to be able to use lottery/gambling funds to fund the DNR and their projects. The cover-up is calling it a “Water quality bill”. 40% of lotto proceeds already go towards Environment and Natural Resources, 60% goes to the general fund. I don’t hunt or fish nearly as much as most of you, but I do know that our public school and food system is severely under funded, MN highways are second to Michigan in terms of pothole size, and second to Wisconsin in terms of haphazard repairs. I will vote no for the “Water quality bill”, I have seen the poor management capacity of the DNR and related agencies when they start buying farmland.
