The state’s push to improve west-east passenger rail to Boston landed an additional $130 million this week, money from Washington, D.C., that will be used to ease a rail bottleneck in Springfield.

The Springfield Hub Modernization Project will upgrade tracks, signals and other infrastructure to reduce conflicts between freight and passenger trains and allow more efficient operations and expanded rail service.

Tuesday Train Trivia: John William Kendrick, chief engineer, general manager & vice-president of the Northern Pacific Railway, was born in Worcester, MA, on October 14, 1853. Educated at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Kendrick formulated the engineering plans for the reconstruction of the Northern Pacific Railway after its construction era. In 1905, he joined the Santa Fe Railway, helping usher in an era of scientific management on that road.
