We think Gelato is one of Italy's gifts to the world, and even on a long trip to Italy, we eat it as often as possible. Today, you can find gelato on nearly every corner in Italy.

Gelato is, on the surface, very similar to American Ice Cream. Even many Italians will use the English words "ice cream" when speaking to English-speaking tourists. But the two are not the same.

Glassmaking in Italy dates back to Roman times, and Venice was already a center of glassmaking by the 1200s. In fact, archeologists discovered 8th century ruins of a glassmaking furnace on one of the Venetian islands back in the 1800s.

Today, the glassmaking is done in Murano, an island just across the Venetian lagoon from Venice.

Monday October 17th is National Pasta Day in the US!
Of course, every day is Pasta Day in Italy. Italy exported over 3.6 Billion worth of pasta in 2021 (in US Dollars), with the US being the biggest importer of Italian Pasta. Pictured here is orecchiette with fresh swordfish, eggplant and ricotta saltata that we had in Ancona, Italy recently.
