Winter hummingbird season is here! Please message me if you still are seeing a bird-- or if a hummer shows up any time between now and April 1st. If you are inland, it is likely you are hosting a western species. But even coastal residents could have something other than a Ruby-throated around at this time of the year.

We already have multiple Rufous (including two return banded birds) here but we are expecting to hear of another species or two over the course of the season...fingers crossed!

After a number of very quiet weeks in our yard, hummer activity has picked up! The first of this year's crop of Ruby-throated here in our neighborhood now has jewelry!! This young male is a sub-dominant. The dominant bird has not been too cooperative letting me get to know him so far!

I am happy to see a youngster in June-- it has been quite a few years since I have seen a fledgling at this point in the summer. I actually think these guys have been around since last week. They may even be siblings.....

Now that female Ruby-throateds are back across NC, they will rapidly be in breeding mode. Both they and the males defend territories that are usually a ways from feeders. Yes-- they will be in different areas: hummingbirds do not pair bond. So do not expect a lot of activity at your feeders for awhile. But be sure to clean them every four to five days-- and it'll only be necessary to refill about half way....

Ruby-throateds are back in the Carolinas! Males are on breeding territories and the females should appear any day. Do not expect to see a lot of feeder activity these first couple month--- the adults will be busy with reproductive activities. But be sure to keep your feeders fresh (clean with hot water every 3-4 days). You almost certainly will only need to fill feeders a third to half capacity until mid-summer when things pick up. Sugar and water (1:4 ratio) is all you need-- NO red dye!
