Most families think the hardest part of a senior move is getting everything there.

It's not. The hardest part is the two weeks after the truck leaves.

A senior's body runs on procedural memory — automatic routines that don't require thinking. Walk to the bathroom. Reach for the lamp. Step down into the living room. These happen without conscious thought because the body has done them thousands of times.

A senior's body navigates by procedural memory — automatic routines that don't require conscious thought. They know the lamp is to the left. They know how many steps to the bathroom. They know where the wall is in the dark.

We moved a client yesterday. She left us a check for more than she owed.

We couldn't reach her by phone — her lines weren't connected yet. So we went in person. That's not something we were willing to leave unresolved.

When we got there, she told us she'd been distressed since the move. Not because anything went wrong. Because her new unit was a mirror image of her old one — same layout, everything flipped. And that small spatial difference had completely unsettled her.

We stayed. She told us what had been happening since the move. That's not a conversation we were going to have over the phone.

Most moving companies are done when the truck pulls away. We're not.
