The ๐๐ก๐๐ซ๐ฅ๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ง ๐๐ก๐๐ฐ has a "๐ด๐ธ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ" past. Now produced by the Tootsie Roll Company, the Charleston Chew was invented by Donley Cross, a former stage actor, who founded the Fox-Cross Candy Company in the 1920s along with his friend Charlie Fox. It gets its name from a popular Black, song and swing dance called "๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ก๐๐ซ๐ฅ๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ง" which reflected African beats and was composed by #๐๐ญ๐ข๐ค๐ฌ musician and composer, ๐๐๐ฆ๐๐ฌ ๐. ๐๐จ๐ก๐ง๐ฌ๐จ๐ง. He played with the likes of ๐๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ญ ๐๐ข๐ต๐ฆ๐ณ๐ด and mentored greats like ๐๐ถ๐ฌ๐ฆ ๐๐ญ๐ญ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ๐ต๐ฐ๐ฏ. โฃ

Prior to the creation of the "๐ด๐ธ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ" treat, Cross and Fox unsuccessfully launched a candy named the Nu Chu, but went back to the drawing board and produced the ๐๐ก๐๐ซ๐ฅ๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ง ๐๐ก๐๐ฐ in the mid-1920s, capitalizing off of the craze of the ragtime song and dance of the time. โฃ

The original candy bar consists of a flavored nougat, covered in a chocolate flavor coating. Since its changing of hands over the years, the candy has evolved adding various flavors to its repertoire. It is still produced today and can be best enjoyed frozen or room temperature -whichever you prefer. Although not created by ๐๐๐ฆ๐๐ฌ ๐. ๐๐จ๐ก๐ง๐ฌ๐จ๐ง, his musical prowess and song popularity undoubtedly contributed to the success of this now . โฃ
