Day 9 Paros & Folegandros 🇬🇷

Today we explored Paros in the morning, once tagged as primarily a ferry hub, its stylish, beautiful capital, trendy resort towns and culturally plump mountain Villages are all the more charming for their lack of crowds. We took a 3 mile hike and then meandered into some shops before heading back to the ship for a delish greek lunch of gyros and greek delights.

Then, in true Nat Geo fashion, they surprised us - and added a 2nd island to the day! Folegandros, Population: 667!! My sense of adventure was more than satisfied!! This island has beauty that's amplified by its cliff-top Chora, one of the most precious villages we've experienced in Greece. Folegandros is so remote that the island was once made a place for political prisoners from Roman times to the 20th century, and as late as the military dictatorship of 1967-74. Today, the seductive charm of Folegandros has left its grim history way behind.

We hiked up to The Church of the Virgin Mary which celebrates her assumption. And then ...went to dinner at Paliomilos Restaurant (10/10!) on an outdoor patio with grape vines surrounding us with ripening grapes! An Oenologist (one step ahead of a sommelier, she's a wine scientist and winemaker) helped us pair the perfect wines with our meal.

Then we ended the night watching the most beautiful sunset. And our new friend Massimo Bassano, (an accomplished photojournalist, Nat Geo photographer, and one of our National Geographic–Lindblad Expedition photo instructors on board), took the most beautiful pictures of us that we will forever cherish.

It was the perfect end to this trip of a lifetime!!!

Day 8 – Naxos, Greece 🇬🇷

Today was a beautiful blend of education and relaxation on the stunning island of Naxos!

We began at the Eggares Olive Press, where we learned about the island’s centuries-old olive oil tradition and their ancient olive tree believed to be over 5,000 years old—the oldest in Greece. Naxos itself didn’t receive electricity until 1962 and the olive oil making was done without it! We also learned that high-quality extra virgin olive oil has a smoke point of about 428°F (220°C), making it excellent for cooking as well as drizzling over fresh Mediterranean dishes!! 🫒

Next, we passed the island’s famous marble quarry, seeing brilliant white marble scattered naturally along the mountainside along the way. Naxian marble was prized throughout the ancient world. We also visited the unfinished Kouros of Flerio, a colossal 2,600-year-old marble statue that broke while being transported and has remained exactly where it fell ever since, now at someone's private home.

We popped back on the ship for a chair massage and a back crack and then the afternoon was pure Greek island bliss—a swim in the crystal-clear Aegean Sea, drinks by the beach, and perfect 70-degree weather under the Mediterranean sun.

We couldn’t leave Naxos without tasting its famous 🧀 Graviera cheese so to the Old Market we went! It's one of Greece’s most celebrated cheeses- rich, nutty, and absolutely delicious, it's easy to see why it continues to win awards! 🥇

Day 7 | Leros, Greece 🇬🇷

Today we discovered one of Greece’s most fascinating islands. We started the morning with an early hike up to the magnificent Castle of Panagia, where sweeping views over the Aegean made every step a new gorgeous vista. Then we headed out for a 13 mile guided bike ride up a mountain with stops to learn about the island (On an E bike - thanks be to God!!).

Leros is a place of incredible beauty, but also has a heart breaking history. In 1957, the Greek government established what was then called the “Psychopaths’ Colony of Leros.” Patients with severe mental illness and intellectual disabilities were transferred from psychiatric hospitals throughout Greece to the island, often after being abandoned by their families. The former Italian military barracks became the institution’s home. Later in 2015 those same barracks became the home of many refugees from Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan.

After a relaxing lunch aboard National Geographic Orion, we wandered the waterfront shops and cafés before ending the day in the best possible way—a lively evening of music and dancing with our unbelievably talented expedition staff band. It was an unforgettable finale to a very active day on this remarkable island!

Day 6 – Bodrum, Turkey 🇹🇷

Today on our Nat Geo Lindblad Expedition we explored the magnificent Bodrum Castle (Castle of St. Peter), one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in Turkey. Built by the Crusaders beginning in 1402, the castle incorporates stones from the nearby Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It now houses the fascinating Museum of Underwater Archaeology, featuring ancient shipwrecks and treasures recovered from the Aegean Sea!

We had a walk around town and tried several varieties of Turkish Delights and meandered around the family owned stores with hand made silk rug and pillows. One store owner offered us a beer and sat us down and called us "now family!"

The afternoon was definitely my favorite part of the day—snorkeling and swimming in the crystal-clear Aegean Sea straight from a traditional Turkish gulet, complete with snacks and a full bar. It was the perfect way to experience the beauty of the Turkish coast! 🌊☀️🐠

In the evening we watched the sun set to music and drinks on the back of the ship!
