The Sistersville Ferry needs your help and support. For almost 200 years the transit service has been a valued part of Tyler County, carrying passengers safely from Sistersville, West Virginia to Fly, Ohio. While the ferry has faced hardships in the past, adapting with changing times and always coming out on top, it needs your help now more than ever. As the ferry board works diligently for a long

term solution, any and all monetary donations from companies, businesses, and individuals will be greatly appreciated. Please help one of Tyler County’s most historic treasures continue operations by sending donations to the City of Sistersville at 200 Diamond Street in Sistersville, West Virginia, Zip Code 26175. Checks can be made payable to Sistersville Ferry. If you have any questions, please call the city building 304-652-6361. Thank you for your help and support!

We've had so many responses to our recent Facebook post about the Ferry, so many, in fact, it's impossible to personally answer each one. Please, just know we appreciate your concern as well as your informative referrals about boats and fundraising ideas. These suggestions will be discussed at the upcoming Board meeting next week. In the midst of the sadness we have experienced since the loss of our beloved Ferry, it is a joy to have the Ohio Valley community, the extensive riverboat community and the Ferry's long-distance friends reaching out in such a caring manner. Thank you all.

We know you have been waiting for a Ferry update. We wanted to wait til we received a definitive assessment of the Ferry’s damage before we responded. We just received awaited news. The insurance company has deemed the boat unrepairable. The barge (or the flat) is not included in that assessment, so is usable. The Ferry Board and Mayor Rice are committed to providing river-crossing transportation service and preserving this treasured piece of Ohio River Valley history. The Sistersville Ferry’s tow boats (or tugs) have been replaced several times over the Ferry’s 200 years. With the help of those who want to see this piece of Ohio/West Virginia history preserved, and who want to provide a river crossing at this point, this boat too will be replaced. A new hospital is currently being built in Sistersville. Overwhelming community feedback tells us there is a desire to have a reliable, dependable and economically feasible source of transportation across the river at this point. So there are practical and historic reasons to provide dependable ferry service at this mile marker. We are willing to work to make that happen. Attaining that goal will require your support. We are currently researching funding sources and have begun boat shopping. If you can provide usable information in either of these areas, please private message us on Facebook.

The moment she was lifted and lowered onto her own barge where she will be examined and damage estimated before the next decision is made for moving forward toward restoring ferry service across this mile marker on the Ohio River. It was a long and early process today getting to this moment. More photos to come.

Although the Ferry looks sadly abandoned as she sits submerged beside her floating barge, we want you to know much is being done behind the scenes to get her out of the water, professionally assess the damage, and initiate a plan for moving forward. The process is painfully slow for those of us who love the Ferry, but it must be so as to ensure this enormous task is properly executed. Steps are being taken to prevent additional damage to the vessel and the environment. We must move at a pace that ensures the safety of personnel doing this work, and we must comply with any and all insurance requirements. Once the Ferry is out of the water, she will go into dry dock where we will learn the scope of the challenge before us. Our goal is to resume ferry service on the Ohio River between Sistersville and Fly, and to preserve and extend the history of the Sistersville Ferry. Once again, thank you for your concern for the Ferry and for your support of her preservation.
