Klenawicus Airfield is operated by the Shelter Island Pilots' Association and is located just south of Burns Road and north of Congdon Road on Shelter Island, NY. Klenawicus Airfield, Identifier NY03, is 1600 feet in length, field elevation 30 feet, and rises gradually to the center from each end of the strip. The pilot of an aircraft at either end of the strip cannot see an aircraft or other obst
ruction at the opposite end because of the topography. Operations during periods of hot weather and light and variable winds require a light fuel load and minimal passenger and freight load. During such conditions the pilot of a two-seater is advised to fly solo with no more than half fuel. During such conditions the pilot of a four-seater is advised to carry only one additional passenger maximum and carry no more than one-fourth to one-half fuel. Further recommendations include visiting maps.google.com and viewing the satellite image of the airstrip, which is bounded by Burns Road to the north, Cartwright Road to the east, Congdon Road to the south, and St. Videos appear on this FaceBook page showing approaches to Klenawicus Airfield as well as depatures from Klenawicus Airfield. During periods of snow and after heavy rains, the airport is closed to operations. During and after periods of extended heavy rains, the south portion of the airstrip may be under water, shortening the available length of the strip. Verification of insurance coverage for short fields and soft fields is required, as is listing Town of Shelter Island and Shelter Island Pilots' Association as named insureds on aircraft insurance policies. Westmoreland Airfield approimately 2 miles southwest of Klenawicus Airfield also uses 122.9, by mutual agreement with Kleanwicus Airfield to avoid traffic pattern infringements. Respectfully, request is made to report takeoff and landings by either private message on FaceBook or by e-mail to [email protected], just prior to the operations and/or just after the operations, to allow reporting of statistics regarding operations to interested parties, and to enable assistance to the FAA in the event of an aircraft not arriving at its final destination, and to properly enable any additional safety procedures. NOTE: Klenawicus Airfield is a private airfield, and therefore is a PPR-airfield or Prior Permission Required-airfield. Please call 917-826-8233 for permission to land. Request shall be made for make, model, N-number of aircraft, address, cell number of pilot, home base of aircraft, short- and soft-field experience. Rotary-wing (helicopter) operations are prohibited by mandate from the Town of Shelter Island, as are commercial operations of any nature. Rotary-wing operations are permitted ONLY for Medivac.
