A Japanese wh***ey pairing at The Wake tonight 🥃 Guess what's on the plate, because the book won't say

JC is in Ketchikan right now on one of the Festival of Senses sailings, and this is the little book that shows up in your cabin.

Here's the thing worth knowing. The Eat and Drink Festival got renamed this year, and the dinner at The Wake rotates by sailing. His happens to be wh***ey and Japanese. The book tells you the event is happening but not what you're eating, so you find out when you sit down.

Extra Virgin has its own option too. He went with The Wake because it sounded the most interesting.

And it is not fleetwide. If you're sailing between now and September 28, check whether yours is one of the festival sailings.

Virgin Voyages rebuilt the Eat Drink Festival this year and renamed it the Festival of Senses. Limited sailings only, August 27 to September 28, on all four ships.

Free:
* A Feast for the Senses in The Manor. No booking, no cost, walk in whenever. The Manor turns into a sensory gallery with films, sound, scent and interactive stations. If you do one thing on this list, do this.

Costs extra:
* Sensory Dinner Series at The Wake. Four courses from the team behind The Flavor Matrix, hosted by a rotating winemaker or distiller. Only 18 to 20 seats a night.
* Color Me Curious at Extra Virgin, $35. Three courses, every dish paired to a color matched cocktail.
* Malt + Method at Draught Haus, $35. Guided b**r tasting on sea days, and you keep the booklet and a bar blade.
* Shhh… Speakeasy, $25. Phones go in a pouch at the door, and that restriction is the whole point.

Real talk, this is an add-on festival, not an included one. The Manor event is genuinely free and genuinely good. Everything else is money on top of your fare, so pick one or two, not six.

One last tip. It all books in the Sailor app once you're on board, and the 18 seat dinner is gone within hours. Book that one the day you board.

Virgin Voyages is about to sail further north than they ever have. Bookings are OPEN NOW! ⬇️

✔️ 11 nights, round-trip from Amsterdam
✔️ Bergen, Nordfjordeid, Flåm
✔️ Tromsø, then Honningsvåg at 71°N
✔️ Trondheim, Åndalsnes, Olden
✔️ An Arctic Circle crossing ceremony onboard
✔️ August 14 to 25, 2028

This is the furthest north Virgin Voyages has ever sailed, and the ship size is the reason it works. 2,700 sailors is small enough to get into Nordfjordeid and Åndalsnes, which the big ships cannot reach. Up there the light barely goes down. You are having dinner at 10pm and it still looks like late afternoon.

Honest note, because I am not going to oversell this one. Summer 2028 is two years out. That is a long time to sit on a deposit and I am not going to pretend otherwise. The reason to move early is cabin choice, not panic. Eleven nights is a long time to be in a room you settled for.

Bookings open Thursday and the best cabins go in the first hours. Get your quote in before then and we will have your sailing picked out and ready to grab the second it opens.

Here's the thing nobody tells you about booking with an agent, and it has nothing to do with the price.

I hear this constantly from sailors: "I called Sailor Services, I just needed them to do one small thing, and I held for..." and then a number I am not going to say out loud. I'll put it this way: my hair will grow three more inches in the time I spend waiting on hold.

JC's answer is the same every time. Just message me. It takes me five minutes.

That's the part that doesn't show up in a quote. You're not just buying a fare, you're buying a person who picks up. Need a dining change handled? A question about your booking? Something looks wrong on your reservation two weeks before you sail? You send one message from a beach chair and it's done.

And to be fair to Virgin here, because this isn't a shot at them: their team is genuinely open to feedback. We've raised real issues and they've made changes that ended up benefiting sailors directly. As a Top 10 First Mate we have access to say "hey, this is wrong," and they listen. That's not nothing, and plenty of cruise lines don't do it.
