While struggling with the fact that Rocky was not like most of the other Architecture students at the University of Washington, he discovered a wonderful photography class instructed by Christian Staub. A brilliant man from Switzerland, Straub understood the relationship of art, design, painting, photography, and how to blend these into a meaningful life. Through him Rocky became fascinated with
the many aspects of design, lighting, color, and studied everything he could find on the subject. After graduation, he realized that, if he wanted to become a successful photographer, he would need to go back for more education. This was a very good decision, for it gave him a strong foundation, and the self-confidence to create an exciting life in the field. After 3 more years in college, he was about to finish ,when he was very blessed to be hired by Albert Watson. Albert, Rocky feels,
is one of the most significant fashion and portrait photographers of the last 50 years. He was a great inspiration to the endless possibilities in the field. It was also great fun, when he was able to assist Helmet Newton on a shoot of Orson Wells for a Japanese scotch, while Albert was out of town, and also while traveling with Albert doing editorial shoots throughout the country. From these and many other experiences, he has learned to see, and create images that are quite unique for the many clients he has enjoyed working with.
