A day in the life of a Foss deckhand is hands-on from the start.

Deckhands help keep the tug ready and the job moving. They handle lines, prepare gear, help maintain the vessel, and assist with making and breaking tow.

For many mariners, deckhand work is the first step toward a long-term career on the water.

Foss Maritime was founded in 1889 by Thea Foss, with a single rowboat on the Tacoma waterfront. Born on June 8, 1857, in Eidsberg, Norway, Thea built her business by putting boats to work in the waterways around her, renting them to fishermen, ferrying customers, and delivering supplies.

More than a century later, June 8 became recognized as World Ocean Day, a reminder that the waters people work on, travel through, and depend on every day need to be protected.

For Foss, that connection has been there from the beginning: from Thea’s first rowboat to today’s fleet. Our work depends on the water, and with that comes a responsibility to operate carefully and protect the places we work.

The John Quigg in Seattle, captured during an assist job.

Work like this can shift quickly, which is why timing, communication, and a steady crew matter. The John Quigg is part of the Foss fleet that helps keep harbor work moving safely when plans change or the next move is ready.

The Lynn Marie during a ship assist out of Seattle’s Terminal 5.

Harbor work takes power, control, and a crew that knows how to move with the vessel. With 6,250 horsepower and 85 tons of bollard pull, the Lynn Marie is built for the job, helping Foss crews support safe, reliable movement in busy ports.

Captured by Tyson Wood.

The Marshall Foss in Seattle, with Captain Steve Semlar making a port side push to help turn a ship around.

Moves like this take power, timing, and trust between the crew and captain. With 6,250 horsepower and 85 tons of bollard pull, the Marshall Foss is built for the job, but it’s the people behind the controls who bring Foss’s safety-first approach to every move.

Foss was founded by Thea Foss, a young Norwegian immigrant who turned one rowboat in Tacoma into the start of a maritime company.

More than 135 years later, her legacy is still part of who we are, carried forward by the women of Foss working on the water, shoreside, and across the company today.

Happy International Women in Maritime Day.
