Handling heavy lines takes training. Foss deckhands splice lines, tie off barges and raft tows, and run the winches and capstans that take up the slack. Getting there starts with a Merchant Mariner Credential and a TWIC card, and it helps to have an Able Seaman rating and STCW endorsement too.

At Foss Maritime, our crews are stronger because of the talented women who help power our operations every day.

From the wheelhouse to engineering, dispatch, and shoreside teams, women play an essential role in keeping our vessels moving safely and efficiently. A great day on the course for an even greater cause!

Last week, Foss Maritime was once again proud to be a Title Sponsor of the Towboat Classic Golf Tournament, bringing together friends, partners, and industry leaders for a fantastic day of golf and camaraderie.

Even better, the event raised $400,000 in support of maritime education—helping invest in the next generation of maritime professionals and leaders.

Proud to be part of an industry that gives back and helps build the future of maritime.

Did you know?

Modern ship-assist tugs generally fall into two categories: tractor tugs and Azimuthing Stern Drive (ASD) tugs.

True tractor tugs have their propulsion units located forward of the towing point, while ASD tugs have their drives at the stern. Voith tugs use a unique propulsion system that can direct thrust in any direction, and many Voith harbor tugs are tractor tugs.

Different designs, same mission: providing the control, maneuverability, and power needed to safely assist vessels many times their size.

Every ship movement is a coordinated effort. In this operation, Lindy works the bow, Bo Brusco assists on the port side, and Garth Foss manages the stern, safely escorting the CMA CGM Arkansas through Puget Sound.

Since 1887, ships passing through the east entrance of Tacoma's Commencement Bay have relied on Browns Point Lighthouse as a marker in dense fog.

The lighthouse evolved from a lens lantern on a white post to a concrete structure with an automated sensor that triggers a horn when visibility drops below 0.8 mile. Before the foghorn was automated, it was operated remotely by Foss Launch and Tug Company, who would place a call that activated the horn with an air compressor.
