I-5 through the Rose Quarter in Portland is aging and needs repairs. Starting September 11, 2026, all lanes of I-5 southbound will be closed through the Rose Quarter between I-405 and I-84 around the clock for up to 5 weeks. One lane will remain open from I-405 to the Broadway exit at the Moda Center. We encourage all commuters to exercise extra caution as there will be increased traffic on local streets in the area around the closure.

We know this is going to be tough for travelers and businesses alike. The more people modify their travel plans, the better the system will function for everyone, including emergency responders and freight trucks. We’re urging travelers to plan ahead, leave early and adjust travel times. Instead of driving, consider taking Amtrak Cascades to avoid traffic during the road closures.

Service between Seattle and PDX has been suspended due to the fire at Centennial Mills facility near the north end of Union Station’s tracks. Buses have been sourced for most other trains between Seattle and Portland. Amtrak continues to source buses for the next few days.

The Coast Starlight will detour through UP’s Albana Yard and connect back to the BNSF mainline near the Columbia River.

The tracks will remain closed indefinitely between Portland Union Station and Vancouver, WA. This situation is being closely monitored by BNSF, UP, and Amtrak. This could impact operations for the next few weeks.

Trains between Portland and Eugene are not impacted.

The Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail runs roughly 75 miles between Troutdale and The Dalles, following the path of the original 1922 highway. Long stretches are car-free, passing landmarks like Multnomah Falls and the restored Twin Tunnels near Mosier, with easier segments suited for families and more demanding climbs for riders looking for a challenge.

From Portland's Union Station, there are a couple of ways you can get to Troutdale. You can walk over to the TriMet stop at NW Everett & 5th and catch the 77 bus toward Troutdale. You could also hop on the Max Green line at NW 6th & Hoyt to Clackamas Town Center and catch the 77 bus there. Both take you directly to downtown Troutdale in about an hour.

It's only $5 to reserve a spot on the train for your bike and you can learn more about our bicycle policy at https://amtrakoregon.com/guide/bicycles
