How do you know your boat only needs wax?

That question came from a real conversation I had with a boat owner earlier that day.

Later, while I was at Fishermen’s Terminal, I came across a perfect example of why we ask questions before recommending a process.

This surface is severely oxidized. You can literally see the degraded material transferring onto my hand.

Wax isn’t going to correct that.

And that’s the disconnect we see all the time in this industry.

Boat owners often call already knowing the service they want:

“I just need wax.”

“Just polish it.”

“Give it a quick buff.”

We understand what you’re asking for.

But what you want may not be what the surface actually needs.

Wax protects a surface. It doesn’t reverse severe oxidation or correct damaged gelcoat.

That’s why we don’t determine the process from a request over the phone.

We look at the surface.

We evaluate the condition.

Then we determine what level of intervention is appropriate.

A customer recently called and said:

“My boat is in the driveway. Can you send someone out to wax it?”

I asked him:

“How do you know your boat only needs wax?”

His response?

“Because I’m the customer.”

Then he hung up.

Now, could I have asked the question differently? Absolutely.

I could have asked when the boat was last detailed, what condition the gelcoat was in, or what he was seeing that made him believe it needed wax.

But the interaction highlighted a bigger disconnect in our industry.

Boat owners often call already prescribing the process:

“I just need wax.”

“Just buff it.”

“It only needs a polish.”

“Can you just wet sand it?”

But how do you know?

A boat can still have some shine and have oxidation, scratches, buffer trails, holograms, sanding marks, or other defects that wax isn’t going to correct.

We can give you the service you ask for.

But what you want may not be what the surface actually needs.

A boat can look shiny and still have surface imperfections.

Sanding marks, buffer trails, holograms, scratches and other defects can remain in the finish even when the gelcoat appears glossy.

Mobile detailing is great for routine dockside detailing and maintenance. But real surface restoration can require a different environment.

Sometimes that means hauling the boat out, having proper access to the hull, and using controlled LED inspection lighting that allows the technician to actually see the imperfections being removed.

Because you can’t properly address defects you can’t see.

Once the surface is properly inspected, the condition determines the appropriate correction process—not simply how shiny the boat looks from a distance.

Shine and surface condition aren’t necessarily the same thing.

When I switched from wet sanding to dry sanding, it completely changed the way I approached boat restoration.

Not because dry sanding is automatically better.

Because I started using high-intensity LED inspection lights.

The light revealed everything.

Every sanding scratch.

Every remaining defect.

Every area that still needed attention.

It forced me to slow down, become more intentional, and let the surface—not assumptions—guide the restoration process.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned over the years is that professional results don’t come from simply buying better tools.

They come from seeing the surface more clearly and making better decisions throughout the restoration.

What’s the first thing you should do during a boat inspection?

Put your hands on the hull.

One of the biggest mistakes boat owners make is judging a boat’s condition from photographs alone.

A boat can look clean in pictures but still have heavy oxidation, gelcoat chalking, and surface deterioration that only becomes obvious when you physically inspect it.

During every on-site boat inspection, we run our hand across the hull to check for oxidation, contamination, and the true condition of the gelcoat.

If your hand comes away covered in white chalk, that’s a sign the gelcoat has oxidized and the boat may require gelcoat correction, wet sanding, or a professional boat restoration process—not just polishing.

That’s why we recommend an on-site boat assessment before providing an estimate.

It allows us to:
