Saltchuk Sharing stories of the hard working People of Saltchuk, those dedicated to making Saltchuk companies

Saltchuk is a diversified family of transportation and distribution companies headquartered in Seattle. With consolidated revenue of nearly $3 billion and approximately 7,500 employees, Saltchuk is ranked among the largest privately held businesses in Washington. Saltchuk companies provide air cargo, domestic shipping and logistics, international shipping and logistics, marine services, petroleum

distribution and trucking services throughout North America. We believe in–and champion–the inherent value of our companies’ individual brands. The Corporate Home provides leadership and resources to our companies, but not direct management of their operations. We do, however, provide integrated leadership in finance, human resources, risk management and internal audit. A primary function of the Corporate Home is to deploy capital and manage debt. Although the company has grown considerably since its’ founding in 1982, the Corporate Home employs about 50 people and has retained the collegial and entrepreneurial culture of a much smaller organization. Saltchuk is a values-driven organization, committed to safety and taking care of its employees, communities and the environment. No roads? No problem. Rainy day on the ramp? Also not a problem for Northern Air Cargo.

We visited our Alaska-based air cargo company NAC last week on a particularly rainy summer day. While most of us were reaching for an umbrella, the NAC team was out on the ramp doing what they do every day: loading freight bound for communities across Alaska.

Here's the thing about Alaska: most of the state isn't connected by road. For dozens of communities, the plane overhead isn't just cargo. It's groceries on the shelf, medicine at the clinic, parts that keep the power on. That freight doesn't wait for good weather, and neither does NAC.

Rain or shine, this team shows up so Alaska has what it needs to thrive. We're proud to call them family.

Meet Sara, our Government Affairs Intern!

Sara spent her time in Saltchuk's D.C. office advocating for the maritime industry before members of Congress. She's attended congressional hearings and industry events, including the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee hearing on the Jones Act and the christening of a National Security Multi Mission Vessel with TOTE Services at the Philly Shipyard, gaining firsthand insight into how policy, industry, and national security intersect.

"This internship gave me a seat at the table in one of the most important industries to Washington state and the nation, advocating on behalf of a company that contributes to America's workforce and national security," shared Sara. "It's also let me experience the exciting, ever-changing nature of U.S. politics firsthand."

"This summer taught me that reaching out, asking questions, and working to build and maintain relationships will help shape my career path and serve me well in the future. I also learned that, especially within Government Affairs, being able to communicate a message concisely to various audiences is the key to being persuasive."

We're proud of the impact Sara made this summer, representing Saltchuk's interests on Capitol Hill.

The Cook Inlet Tug and Barge crew of the Bering Wind let us ride along for a TOTE Maritime ship assist in the Port of Alaska this week. Every safe departure keeps groceries, gear, and goods moving to the Alaskans counting on them.
