Here is a petrol tanker passing under the GG heading back to sea. She looks like she is going slow, but she is steaming at about 10 knots here which is hauling the mail - so she must be heading home empty. How can I tell how fast at that angle? The bow wave height. When you can see white water coming off the bow that's 10-12 knots depending on the height of the wave and how much tonnage she is carrying.

I was involved in the 97-98' Whitbread Race, my first big sailing race and I've been hooked ever since (Thanks to Paul Cayard and Mark Rudiger).
