The question I got asked more than any other while I was in Alaska: which month should I go?

There isn’t a best one. There’s the one that matches what you actually want. Bears and warmth mean July. Value and northern lights mean September. Long days and dry weather mean June.

Three things I’d change about this week.
If I really wanted to see bears I’d book July or early August. Late season the salmon slow down and the bears don’t show.

Don’t build the trip around one glacier day. Ours got cancelled for fog, and no itinerary can promise you scenic cruising.

Leave more of the port days unplanned. My best hours all week were Creek Street and the trail out to Nugget Falls, and neither one needed a booking.

What I wouldn’t change is going.
This is what a working cruise is for. When you ask me about Alaska now, you’re getting answers I paid for myself.

My excursion flopped. The day didn’t.

Ketchikan taught me something today at my own expense. Bear viewing gets unreliable late in the season once the salmon runs slow down. I knew that, said it in my own comments last week, and booked it anyway.

Geoff went fishing the same morning and came back with multiple salmon, packed and shipping them home.

The best part of the day cost nothing. Creek Street, salmon running right below us, a sea lion in the water, and a good meal.

If Alaska is on your list: book the ports, stay flexible on the extras, and leave part of the day unplanned.
That’s where the good stuff usually is.

Off to find some bears in Ketchikan.

This is the one Alaska excursion I’ve been recommending to clients without ever having done it myself.
That changes this morning.
I’ll report back tonight on whether it lives up to what I’ve been telling people, and whether I’d send someone who’s worried about the walking.

The captain cancelled our glacier this morning. Then the whales showed up.

Humpbacks all around the ship for the better part of the afternoon. 🐳
Blows in every direction, tails going down one after another, and everyone out on deck completely quiet watching it..

That’s Alaska.
It takes something and then it hands you something else, and you can’t plan which one you get.

So what are you waiting for?

Day five was supposed to be Endicott Arm Glacier Viewing Day

The captain called it off. The fog is too dense to get in safely.

This is the part of Alaska nobody puts in the brochure.
Scenic cruising is weather dependent, and no itinerary can promise you a glacier.

Captains make that call on the morning, and they make it for good reasons.

So here’s what I’d actually tell a client. Don’t book a seven day Alaska sailing around one glacier day. Build the trip so it’s still worth it if the weather takes something from you, because sometimes it will.

I’d rather show you this than pretend every day is postcard weather. 💚

Get ready with me for Skagway.

Today is White Pass, the railway built during the Klondike gold rush, climbing almost 3,000 feet in twenty miles.

Skagway is the port people underestimate. It’s tiny, the whole town is a few blocks, and the thing you came for is what’s above it.

I’ll tell you tonight whether the train earns its price. Follow along. 💚. Tag a friend who you’d love to go to Alaska with.

Port Day 1, DONE ✅
This is what Juneau looks like at the end of it.

Mendenhall Glacier this morning, both trails, then straight out on the water for whales.

Here’s what I’d tell you…

Most people pull up, look at the glacier and the waterfall from the visitor center, take the photo, and get back on the bus. It’s a beautiful view.
But walk the trail to the end..

Nugget Falls up close is a completely different experience than Nugget Falls from a parking lot, and the walk out there is the part I’ll remember most.

It’s flat, it’s about a mile and a half round trip, and it’s worth every step.

Save this for your Juneau day and send it to a friend you want to do Alaska with. 💚
