Electric yard trucks are proving they can handle the work. But are the economics adding up for fleets?

A new report from the North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE) shows encouraging results: 76% of fleet operators report operating cost savings compared with diesel, and more than half have moved beyond pilot projects.

Real-world experience from fleets like Lazer Logistics and Wegmans, along with insights from manufacturer Orange EV, is helping paint a clearer picture of electric terminal tractor performance, maintenance costs, and charging needs.

Yet despite the operational gains, many fleets still aren't ready to call the investment a financial success. Higher upfront costs, financing challenges, and questions about long-term returns remain.

NACFE went back to electric terminal tractors four years later and found the equipment arguments settled and the money arguments still being had.

For nearly a century, trailers have had a major security weakness: anyone could hook one up and drive away. In 2025, cargo theft losses across the U.S. and Canada reached nearly $725 million, up 60% from the previous year.

A new technology aims to change that, combining electronic locking, automated landing gear, and AI-powered monitoring to help protect their trailers.

But preventing theft is only part of the story. The system also addresses a physically demanding task that has long been a safety concern for truck drivers.

🚛 See how the technology works, why it was redesigned before launch, and what it could mean for fleets. Read the full story on :

A trailer security startup put an electronic lock and a motor on the one mechanical point that decides whether a trailer goes anywhere at all.

Remember when Los Angeles' mountains disappeared behind thick layers of smog?

Southern California has come a long way since then. In fact, maximum ozone levels have dropped to less than one-quarter of their 1950s levels, even as the region's population and vehicle traffic have grown.

Cleaner has played an important role in that progress. Over the past three decades, the industry has evolved from early natural gas truck deployments to large-scale electric fleet projects, with investments in cleaner vehicles, fuels, and helping drive meaningful change.

But getting cleaner trucks on the road is only part of the challenge. Making these technologies work reliably and economically in everyday fleet operations requires much more than the vehicles themselves.

What can decades of clean transportation progress teach us about the next generation of fleet deployments and air-quality improvements?

Decades of clean transportation projects in Southern California show how funding, infrastructure and fleet experience can turn emerging technologies into equipment capable of doing everyday work.

⚡ The 400-mile electric truck is becoming a reality.

European truck manufacturers are pushing battery-electric technology deeper into long-haul freight, with new models from Volvo Trucks, MAN, Scania, DAF, and Mercedes-Benz Trucks offering longer ranges, larger batteries, and faster charging.

Several new models now exceed 400 miles of maximum range, while megawatt charging could bring charging stops closer to the length of a driver’s break.

While these are primarily headed for European roads, the developments address many of the same questions facing North American : range under load, charging time, payload, , and total cost of ownership.

Read the latest from to see how the next generation of electric trucks is taking shape. 👇

New electric trucks from Europe’s largest manufacturers are pushing range beyond 400 miles while megawatt charging promises to bring charging times closer to a driver’s break.

Three new electric are hitting the streets of New York City with a dual mission: delivering food to New Yorkers in need while reducing emissions in one of the city’s busiest freight corridors.

City Harvest has added three Volvo VNR Electric trucks equipped with battery-electric refrigeration units to its food rescue fleet. The trucks will operate across all five boroughs, including the Bronx, where City Harvest expects to increase the amount of food it provides by 25% this year.

The deployment is part of the Bronx Is Breathing initiative and demonstrates how electric trucks can support demanding, real-world urban freight operations while advancing critical community services.

The U.S. House has voted to extend the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) program through fiscal year 2029, advancing a federal program that has helped fleets replace and retrofit older diesel vehicles and equipment.

The legislation authorizes up to $100 million annually through FY2029, but that does not mean new funding is automatically available. Congress must still determine actual funding through the annual appropriations process.

For fleets, DERA has supported projects ranging from early vehicle and engine replacements to emissions-control retrofits, idle-reduction equipment, aerodynamic technologies, and low-rolling-resistance tires.

The House vote is one step in the reauthorization process, with companion legislation still awaiting action in the Senate.

FedEx is scaling up its electric fleet with an order for 2,000 all-electric trucks from Harbinger, a deal valued at more than $300 million.

Planned for delivery by the end of 2027, the Class 5 and Class 6 trucks will replace conventional pickup and delivery vehicles on a one-for-one basis across North America.

The order follows an initial 53-truck deployment and represents a major step from early deployment to fleet-wide scale. Harbinger estimates the 2,000 vehicles could reduce fuel costs by approximately $40 million annually once fully deployed.

For , the deal offers a look at what scaling medium-duty electrification requires, from vehicle performance and operating economics to production capacity and charging infrastructure.
