Most of our days are filled with “main quests”: assignments, destinations, and tasks to check off—from the day-to-day (get groceries, do the laundry) to the long-term (start a business, buy a home).

But what about the side quests?

“Side quest” is a phrase that originated in the gaming community. It describes those smaller, optional adventures that players can pursue alongside their main mission—wandering off the path to see what they might discover.

And maybe that’s not such a bad idea for the rest of us.

So, this September, what do you think about taking a side quest? Take the scenic route. Try the little restaurant you’ve driven past a hundred times. Follow a curiosity just because you can.

You never know what you might discover—or what you might see along the way.

A few seconds of attention can make an important difference.

Our community has experienced several recent rattlesnake bites, including a child bitten near a delivered package and a dear colleague bitten while tending to her rose bushes.

These incidents are a sobering reminder that rattlesnakes can be difficult to see and may shelter close to our homes.

Before collecting a package, moving a planter, reaching into a garden bed, trimming bushes, picking up toys, or stepping into a garage or shed:

Pause. Look carefully. Then reach.

Never place your hands or feet somewhere you cannot clearly see. Wear protective shoes, long pants, and gloves when working outdoors, and remind children not to reach beneath bushes, rocks, or outdoor objects.

If you see a rattlesnake, slowly move away, keep children and pets back, and do not attempt to touch or capture it.

If someone is bitten, call 911 and seek medical attention immediately. Do not use ice, a tourniquet, cutting, or suction.
