All my colleagues, my son Chris Sweeney, new book will be available everywhere in July. It should be of great interest in our community Here’s a brief highlight of the true story.
We all remember Captain Sully and the Miracle on the Hudson. But did you know that in 1960, an Eastern Air Lines flight out of Logan struck a flock of birds and crashed into the harbor, killing more than 60 people. Or that in 1962, a United flight bound for DC collided with a flock of swans at 5,000 feet and crashed, killing everyone. Or that in 1964, NASA Astronaut Ted Freeman hit a snow goose in his training jet over Houston and crashed and died--the first astronaut death. These are just some of the tragedies covered in my son's forthcoming book "The Feather Detective," a biography of Roxie Laybourne, who spent her life studying bird strikes for the Air Force, the FAA, and others to make the skies safer for passengers, pilots, and birds. As anyone in the industry knows, bird strikes remain a constant challenge. This is a fascinating book about an incredible woman that anyone who works in aviation will appreciate.
