The Transportation Department provides home-to-school / school-to-school transportation for Special Education students. This service was offered to non-Special Education students prior to the 2008-2009 school year. In addition, other types of bus services are provided each year such as, class field trips, academic shuttles, late activity buses, band competition transportation, athletic team transp
ortation and outside district organizations hire SMUSD buses and drivers for transportation to various events. The Special Education program consists of thirty-nine wheelchair equipped buses. Thirty of the buses and eight vans are servicing 38 different routes daily. A total of 530 Special Education students are transported daily providing service for the district’s regional and non-regional students. Regional students are transported to several different locations throughout San Diego County. The annual miles driven are approximately 840,000 for both the Special Education Transportation program and all the other bus services listed above. The Transportation Department consists of a Director, two Dispatchers, a State Certified Driving Instructor, a part-time Secretary, three Mechanics and 45 Bus Drivers including Substitutes and 19 bus aides. This department report to the Director of Maintenance, Operations and Transportation. The Mechanic staff is also responsible for the maintenance of all 205 district vehicles and mobile equipment including tractors, lawn equipment, towing trailers, and forklifts. The Transportation Staff strictly adheres to California Code of Regulations, Title 13 requirements which are governed by the California Department of Education, California Highway Patrol, and the Department of Motor Vehicles. The Transportation Department must pass an annual inspection conducted by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). This inspection includes audits of the School Bus driver training records, time records for every driver, Federal drug and alcohol testing records, and school bus maintenance records.
