San Francisco Entrance Buoy #2

: This buoy serves as a crucial aid to navigation (ATON) maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard. It explicitly marks the waters near the famous South Tower of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Design & Type: Structurally, it is a conical nun buoy. Because it features a red color and an even number (“2”), it follows the classic maritime rule of “Red Right Returning”. This indicates to inbound vessels entering the San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean that they must keep this marker on their starboard (right) side to stay safely within the shipping channel.

Radar Assistance: During heavy Bay Area fog, this specific buoy provides an essential radar signature for large commercial ships and captains to safely localize and avoid the bridge’s massive concrete south pier.
