West Marine is preparing for bankruptcy. The largest boating retailer in the US, with over 230 stores, is in restructuring talks and planning to close locations.

This isn't just a retail story. For sailors and boaters, West Marine has been the place you run to when a cleat breaks at 5pm on a Friday before a weekend passage.

It's the chandlery, the last-minute rigging fix, the place you impulse-bought that handheld VHF you definitely needed. However, all of us sailors know West Marine has become WAY too expensive, and often doesn't make sense with other options like Amazon.

New powerboat sales are down nearly 10% from last year. Consumer spending on boating is softening. And the debt load just got too heavy to carry.

If you've got a West Marine nearby, it might be worth checking what's in stock.
