I think one of the biggest mistakes people make in business is looking for a partner who's just like them.

Why on earth would I want another me?

One is quite enough, thank you. 😂

The real magic happens when you find someone who brings an entirely different set of strengths to the table, and you have enough respect for each other to let them get on with it.

And that's what I think Hayden and I have got right.

Family dynamics can be complicated enough without adding employees, finances, big decisions, and the pressures of growing a company into the mix.

But being family doesn't automatically make you good business partners. In fact, I'd argue it makes mutual respect, accountability, and clearly defined roles even MORE important.

I don't need to be involved in every decision.

And neither does he.

We both have areas where we're strongest, and we've built a partnership that gives each of us the freedom to really lean into those strengths.

There's an enormous amount of trust involved in that.

And I think one of the biggest advantages is that neither of us has to be everything to everyone.

We can challenge each other, bring different perspectives to the table, and make decisions based on what's best for the business rather than whose idea it was.

I can confidently say we wouldn't be where we are today without Hayden.

Not simply because he's helped us grow, but because of the way he's positioned the business to keep growing.

And that's the part that really excites me.

We've already seen tremendous growth, but we're both looking at the bigger picture. What else could we build? How much further could we take this? What would be possible if we kept pushing?

We're aligned on the ambition, even if we bring very different things to achieving it.

And I think that's what makes this partnership so powerful.

We've built something pretty special together.

I think one of the biggest misconceptions about running a moving company is that we're just in the business of moving people's belongings.

If only it were that simple.

We're walking into people's homes at some of the biggest turning points in their lives.

Sometimes they're celebrating a new beginning. Sometimes they're leaving behind a chapter they weren't ready to close. Sometimes they're dealing with things far bigger than a moving truck and a mountain of boxes.

And our job is to understand that.

It's why I'm so particular about the little things.

How we speak to someone who's overwhelmed.
How carefully we handle something that might not be worth a lot of money but means the absolute world to its owner.
How quickly we put something right when we've made a mistake.

Because people might forget how many boxes we packed, but they won't forget how we made them feel during a difficult day.

And I want our crews to understand that too.

I'm incredibly proud of the business we've built, but I don't want to build a company that's successful on paper and forgets about the people who make it successful.

That includes the families who invite us into their homes AND the families our crews go home to every night.

That's the responsibility of running a family business that I take very seriously.

The movers had already loaded the truck when our client realized something very important:

Her new house keys were packed somewhere inside it.

Which is a very good reminder that there are some things that should NEVER go on the moving truck.

Save this list for move day:

1️⃣ KEYS
New house keys, old house keys, garage remotes, gate fobs and storage keys.

2️⃣ IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS
IDs, passports, closing paperwork, leases, insurance documents and anything you may need that day.

3️⃣ MEDICATIONS
Especially anything you need daily. Keep prescriptions and basic medical essentials with you.

4️⃣ WORK ESSENTIALS
Laptop, chargers, headphones, hotspot and anything you’ll need before everything is unpacked.

5️⃣ PET + KID BASICS
Food, leashes, medications, favorite comfort items, diapers, bottles and pajamas.

6️⃣ FIRST-NIGHT BAG
Toiletries, change of clothes, towels, toilet paper, sheets and phone chargers.

7️⃣ VALUABLES + SENTIMENTAL ITEMS
Jewelry, cash and small irreplaceable items are better kept personally with you.

8️⃣ YOUR “I NEED THIS BEFORE WE UNPACK” BOX
Coffee maker, mugs, snacks, paper towels, scissors, basic tools...whatever keeps your household functioning while everything else is still in boxes.

And here’s the part people miss:

Don’t just label these things “OPEN FIRST.”

Keep them completely separate from anything being loaded.

Put them in your car BEFORE the movers arrive, designate one specific bag, or create a clearly marked no-load zone in the house.

Because “I know exactly which box it’s in” becomes considerably less helpful when that box is somewhere inside a fully loaded moving truck.

Save this list before your next move.

And maybe put the keys in your handbag now.

One thing I learned early in business that is hard for a lot of people to swallow...

You cannot be brilliant at every part of it.

In the beginning, you have to try anyway.

You answer every phone call personally.
Take every order.
Count every piece of inventory.
Build the schedule.
Solve the problem.
Chase the detail.
Then probably answer another phone call while doing it.

But somewhere along the way, if you build the right team, you get to stop asking, “What needs doing?” and start asking, “Where am I actually most valuable?”

For me, the answer has always been people.

When Hayden joined A SMART MOVE and really strengthened the operational side of the business, it gave me more room to be where I’m best: out in the community.

Shaking hands.
Introducing myself.
Learning what someone does.
Remembering their name.
Making the introduction that could help their business.
Telling a room full of people, “These are some of the best in the industry, use them.”

And, naturally, making sure everyone has seen my shoes.

Because networking, to me, isn’t walking into a room trying to collect the most business cards.

It’s working the room with a purpose.

Who haven’t I met yet?
What does this person actually do?
Who could I introduce them to?
What can I remember about them the next time we meet?
How do I make sure they leave knowing exactly who we are and that if I say I’ll take care of something, I will?

That last part matters.

I can shake every hand in San Diego, but relationships only become valuable when there’s trust behind them.

So yes, these days you’ll find me doing a little less inventory counting and a lot more “shaking hands and kissing babies.”

And I’ve learned that leaning into your strengths isn’t getting out of the work.

Sometimes it’s finally figuring out which work only you can do. And that is the energy I try and bring into every room.

What does a 45-foot container have in common with 47 plants?

Both are things that have somehow entered the moving-day conversation a little later than expected.

And honestly, I get it.

When you live with something every day, you stop seeing it.

The patio furniture.
The bikes hanging in the garage.
The planters outside.
The shelves in storage.
The things tucked down the side of the house.
The “oh yes, obviously that’s coming too” stuff that never even registers as something worth mentioning.

Until someone has to physically move it.

We once had a 45-foot container come into the picture after the original inventory had been planned.

Another time: 47 plants.

Not exactly tiny details. 😂

But this is also why our process works the way it does.

Before the move, we get on a video call and actually walk through the home with you.

Not because we’re trying to interrogate you about every lamp you own.

Because when we can SEE the space, we can catch the things that are hiding in plain sight.

The patio.
The garage.
The storage area.
The oversized pieces.
The plants you stopped noticing three years ago.

It helps us plan the right crew, truck space, timing and logistics before move day instead of discovering everything in real time.

And when something still pops up?

We pivot.

Because no matter how much you plan, moving has a funny little habit of revealing one more thing.

Our job isn’t to make you feel bad for forgetting it.

Our job is to look at it, adjust the plan and say, “Right. We’ve got it.”

Even when “it” is 47 plants.

After moving here from England, there are still things Californians do that make me think... we are all just accepting this?

1️⃣ Build multimillion dollar homes basically ON a cliff.

Ocean views are gorgeous until you're the moving company figuring out how to get an entire household down a narrow coastal road, through a gated driveway and up three flights of stairs.

2️⃣ Own incredibly successful businesses and live day to day in flip flops.

You can be talking to someone who runs a massive company in La Jolla and never know it from what they're wearing, while five feet away someone is dripping in Dior.

And somehow, they both fit perfectly.

Coastal California does luxury differently.

3️⃣ Treat the garage like an extra house.

Surfboards, bikes, gym equipment, w**e, tools, storage, business inventory. We've moved people into beautiful homes where the garage requires almost as much planning as the house.

4️⃣ Put a $100,000 car outside because the garage is full.

See #3. 😂

5️⃣ Build houses where the VIEW clearly won the argument over practicality.

Glass everywhere.
Tight staircases.
Hillsides.
Elevators.
Giant statement furniture that somehow needs to get inside.

Beautiful? Absolutely.
Easy to move into? Different conversation.

This is why you hire professionals. 😉

6️⃣ Run businesses from places that barely feel like workplaces.

Coastal offices. Home offices that look like showrooms. Businesses designed around being able to live and work somewhere beautiful.

The line between lifestyle and business feels very different here.

7️⃣ Completely stop noticing the Pacific Ocean is RIGHT THERE.

People pay a premium to build their lives around the coast, then casually tell you they haven't been to the beach in months.

I came here expecting sunshine and palm trees.

I didn't expect California to have its own rules for how people live, work, build homes, run businesses and apparently use their garages.

After years of moving people through San Diego, I've mostly adjusted...

But I'm leaving my own impression in the silver boots.

Apparently all it takes to get me stopping complete strangers on the streets of Del Mar is a microphone!

The answer to that last one was yes, by the way. 😂

We got a Denmark-to-Del-Mar move, an 18-year Del Mar resident, a very strong restaurant recommendation, a coconut margarita that may or may not actually be a daiquiri, and my boots received arguably more attention than I did.

Honestly? Lovely afternoon. Where should we go next and what should we ask them!

But now I want to make this a proper series.

What’s the constant theme in your life that made you who you are?

For me, it’s been saying yes.

Not blindly. Not because I always knew exactly what I was doing.

But because some of the biggest turning points in my life started with being willing to take the opportunity first and figure the rest out along the way.

Moving countries.
Starting something new.
Taking on work I’d never done before.

Building a business I never could have planned for.

Looking back, the details changed, but the pattern didn’t.

There’s usually a thread running through our lives long before we realize it’s there.
