On December 23, 1994, legendary Hawaiian big-wave surfer Mark Foo lost his life while surfing at Mavericks, California. He wiped out on a massive winter swell and did not resurface.

Mavericks is known as one of the most powerful and dangerous waves in the world, and that day the ocean proved just how unforgiving it can be.

Mark Foo was more than just a surfer—he was a pioneer who helped bring big-wave surfing into the global spotlight during the 1980s and 90s. His fearless spirit inspired an entire generation of surfers to push beyond limits.

Even today, his legacy lives on in every big-wave rider who charges the ocean with courage and respect. 🌊

Gone but never forgotten.

In 2015, Mick Fanning, a 3-time World Surf League Champion, faced one of the most terrifying moments of his life. While competing in South Africa, a massive shark attacked him. The shark bit his surfboard and grazed his arm, leaving him physically injured but alive, thanks to quick action from safety teams.
But the real pain wasn’t just the physical wound. The trauma stayed with him long after. He described nightmares, anxiety, and a constant fear every time he went back into the ocean. For someone who had spent a lifetime mastering the waves, the ocean, a place of joy and freedom, suddenly became a place of danger.
It’s heartbreaking because it shows that even the strongest, most skilled surfers can be vulnerable. The line between thrill and tragedy is thinner than we imagine, and surviving an ordeal like that leaves scars you can’t see.

When you look back at Kelly Slater’s career, it’s not just about the number of photos, it’s about those rare, unforgettable moments that became part of surfing history.

Pipeline stands out as the ultimate proving ground, perfect barrels, split-second decisions, and Kelly showing time and time again why he belongs in the conversation as the greatest.

Backdoor, where everything happens fast and heavy, and he always seemed to read the wave a fraction before anyone else.

Teahupo’o, where he faced one of the heaviest waves on Earth and still committed fully, showing courage and precision in the most critical conditions.

Jeffreys Bay, the definition of flow, long, perfect walls, incredible speed, and that effortless style that made it look almost easy.

And then Fiji - moments like Bernard Testemale’s iconic 2000 shot capture something timeless. Light, water, motion, all in perfect harmony with Kelly right in the center of it.

Across more than 40 years, these rides aren’t just highlights, they’re chapters of a legacy that changed surfing forever.

Two generations. One ocean mindset.

Gerry Lopez brought style, calm, and soul to surfing long before it became mainstream. Kelly Slater took that spirit and pushed performance to another level.

A picture of these two together is more than surfing history, it’s pure respect between legends.
