Your Europe trip isn't cancelled โ but here's what you need to do now
There's a lot of noise right now about travelling to Europe in 2026 โ entry requirements, geopolitical uncertainty, the weaker US dollar. I want to cut through it and give you something actually useful.
First, the reassurance: Western Europe is not a primary target of current global tensions, and demand for cultural travel, city breaks, and land-based tours continues to be strong. The Traveler People are going. Tours are operating. Europe is open.
What IS a different story right now is cruising. Major cruise lines have been withdrawing or reshuffling itineraries at short notice, reflecting deeper operational and geopolitical concerns โ particularly in the Mediterranean and Middle East regions. Travel And Tour World If you have a cruise booked or are considering one, stay close to communications from your cruise line and make sure you have the right protection in place.
Which brings me to the most important thing I want to say in this post:
Travel insurance is non-negotiable right now.
In a stable world, travel insurance is a good idea. In the current climate, it's essential.
Here's what to look for:
๐น Trip cancellation cover โ if your tour or cruise is cancelled by the operator
๐น Trip interruption cover โ if something changes mid-trip
๐น Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) โ the gold standard when the world feels unpredictable
๐น Medical evacuation cover โ never leave home without it
๐น "Travel supplier default" cover โ protection if a company ceases operations
The difference between land-based tours and cruises right now is significant. Land tours are largely unaffected by the current disruptions and continuing as planned. Cruises โ particularly those repositioning through or operating near the Middle East โ are in a more uncertain position. Your insurance needs to reflect which type of travel you're booking.
๐ Your 2026 Europe pre-travel checklist:
* Check your passport is valid for at least 3 months beyond your departure from Europe
* Visiting the UK? Apply for your ETA before you go โ it's already required
* Know your 90/180-day Schengen rule if visiting multiple countries
* ETIAS is coming in 2026 โ not required yet, but worth knowing about
* Get comprehensive travel insurance โ don't skip this step
* Factor in the exchange rate โ the USD has weakened against the euro
Europe is wonderful and it is absolutely worth visiting. These are preparation steps, not reasons to stay home.
And if you'd rather hand all of this complexity to someone who tracks it so you don't have to โ that's exactly what I'm here for.
