A**l fistulas can be easy to overlook at first. A sore spot, recurring swelling, persistent drainage, or a “boil” that keeps coming back may seem minor, but these can be early signs of a fistula-in-ano.
Early recognition and referral matter, especially when a patient has:
- Persistent or recurring drainage
- Repeated swelling or abscess formation
- A small opening or tender area near the a**s
- Pain that improves after drainage, then returns
- Fever, spreading redness, or worsening swelling
For primary care and GI providers, recurrent abscesses or ongoing drainage should prompt consideration of referral to a colorectal surgeon for further evaluation.
Once diagnosed, treatment should focus not only on closing the fistula, but also on controlling infection and preserving sphincter function.
At Adler MicroMed, our neoLaser ALFA™ solution supports minimally invasive, sphincter-sparing laser treatment for selected fistula patients.
