During a downtown tour the other week I discovered a new art project in progress across the street from Historic Market Square! It’s the beginning of a huge mural and I can’t wait to see how it’s coming along this week, so stay tuned. I don’t know who the artist is or what the theme is yet, but I’m looking forward to finding out more.

Teacher perk! When I’m not guiding tours around our city, I’m in the classroom doing my “other” job—teaching! Over the weekend I had the privilege of attending ‘Teach the Alamo: STEAM’ professional development day at the The Alamo. A bonus was a guided tour of the Alamo, including the newest outdoor permanent display, the Charli-Losoya House with the 18-pound Cannon mounted on top, as it was during the 1836 battle. Love learning new ways to teach STEAM concepts alongside Texas history. Thank you to the entire Education team at the Alamo!

Finally visited the new St. James AMEC Culture Crossing along the San Pedro Creek Culture Park, and it’s a beautiful place to sit and reflect. It’s both a gorgeous art installation and historical memorial to the 1st African American church in San Antonio. I’ll definitely be back when the weather cools down & take in the detail of the African American quilt patterns. Have you checked out this unique place downtown yet?

When I found out about Casa Navarro’s hands-on Adobe Brick workshop, I knew I had to check it out! This is what I learned: 1) It’s much more labor intensive than expected; 2) It can take weeks for the bricks to dry in the sun; 3) Using your hands to combine the dirt, clay, hay, and water and then fill the mold is more efficient and satisfying. My contribution was adding the hay and pouring water. I can’t wait to see how our bricks turned out! Thank you Texas Historical Commission for showing us how it’s done.

I have so missed the Paseo walkway that connects the Riverwalk to the Alamo while it has been closed for refurbishment, and was thrilled to tour the upper and lower levels of the new Paseo today! I led a tour with a guest on a mobility scooter, and the new ramp and elevator were exactly what we needed. Love the calming sounds of the waterfall and the educational display about the Edwards Aquifer and fun facts about the San Antonio River. Have you visited the newly opened Paseo yet?!
