Post 6 Friday Sept. 21st G’Day on ya’. I want to give you all a few things to ponder over the weekend. First and foremost Pride, Honor, Dignity, Respect and Quality. When you take Pride in yourself and what you do, you begin to conduct yourself Honorably, then you earn some Dignity, and people give you respect, the result is you develop Quality relationships. Then you have people who you want to do business with… and they want to do business with you. Because you, as a Driver, are a good Ambassador for their company… And you, as a Company, need the people you contract with to represent your BRAND with all of the previously mentioned attributes. If either one of you are willing to conduct business with less than these standards… I truly wish you the best… BUT… I WILL be doing MY business with somebody else. I don’t need or want LESS THAN… at the last company I worked for I began to refuse to do business with many brokerages… I still got loaded. Made more money in the long run, had WAY FEWER problems and although sometimes I had to work a little harder… I slept better… and over time that Pride led to Honor, which earned me Dignity, and people (some reluctantly) gave me respect and I developed Quality Relationships with people I now call Freinds. Secondly… but maybe even more important. All of us know and/or see somebody who maybe isn’t having a “good day” it feels pretty good to “HOOK A BROTHER UP”… Dissin’ somebody not only keeps them from takin’ a little pride in the days work… It keeps you both from earning some Dignity… so… Conduct yourself Honorably and build a Quality Relationship and pay it forward. You never know when you might be on the side of the road with a blown turbo and ol’ boy can give you a lift to the hotel. I guess I’ve made my point, no sense in beatin’ the horse any harder… just this one more point… If your takin’ Pride… & the people your doin’ business with, (or WHAT EVER), in life aren’t showing you Respect… You might just wanna take your business elsewere. Don’t be “SCEERT” there are PLENTY of good people out here doin’ it right, and they’re lookin’ for people like you. The rest will eventually change or go out of business… either way they don’t need to be your problem.

Post #5 Sept. 19th 2012 So we’ve talked some about what Freight costs to ship and why it doesn’t. What a truck SHOULD be equipped with; a smart phone, GPS, laptop, C.B. and a driver with the proper endorsements and tools, a TWIC card is an added bonus and an eight year old or less trailer. If you are a Manufacturer/Shipper or Receiver you should (in MOST ALL cases) be able to load or un-load a truck in less than 2 hours of it’s arrival, & yes everybody knows that things happen… your customer needs something tomorrow he forgot to order last week and you are trying to hook them up. Well… now it is time to discuss “ACCESSORIAL CHARGES” such as “Detention” (any amount of time over two hours a truck spends at your facility) should pay between $50.00 and $65.00 and hour. The reasons being that Drivers only have 14 hours per day to “Be on Duty” and of that 14 hrs. only 10hrs. available to drive… And they have to do an “Inspection” of their equipment, Fuel the Truck, Get Un-Loaded, get to their Pick-Up & get Loaded… then drive (within the posted speed limit) to their next delivery… If they spend 4hrs Un-Loading and 4hrs Re-Loading… they only have 6 hrs available to drive before they MUST take a 10 hr break. So that Driver only gets paid on about 300 miles for the day and he has worked for 14 hrs. Then you have lay-overs… Say the freight you tendered to “Joe’s Trucking” was supposed to pick-up at Noon… but your line goes down and the truck sits till 10 am the next morning to finish loading, Lay-Over should be a minimum of $250.00 to cover the cost of fuel, (if the truck stays Idling) or a Motel for the driver, the lost wages for the driver, and a little something for the lost revenue of the truck; Now… I get your perspective as the person “Paying for the Freight”… ” Who is gonna pay me these charges when a Truck is late getting to MY Facility. Well… that is a concern that should be addressed and quite frankly I have seldom seen it handled… shall we say… “EQUITABLY”. The problem being that Trucks/Drivers are “MOBILE” and thus are more prone to encounter obstacles and are subject to “Acts of God” (not to offend anybody’s delicate sensibilities) such as Weather, Traffic, Road Conditions not to mention the “All too occasional D.O.T. inspection”. Now as a Shipper/Reciever you have “Unforeseeable” obstacles to overcome also… such as people calling in sick, Fork Lifts & Machinery breaking down, Product that doesn’t meet “Specs”, OSHA inspections… etc. So… hang with me… There is a point coming; And it is this, The goal here is for Product to be moved; and moved Safely, Efficiently & where nobody is “STUCK” paying insane rates or being all but “FORCED” to haul at a “Loss”; if a Truck/Driver has TRULY done everything possible, including Communicating his situation up and down the line, and misses his “WINDOW” then slapping them or their Company with a Charge is unproductive, there are other options, But… on the other hand if a Truck/Driver simply shows up late with a bunch of “EXCUSES” then certainly some compensation should be made to the Shipper/Receiver to maintain “Good Faith” and I would refer you to the afore mentioned numbers to use as guidelines. The point of this excersise on “Accessorial Charges” is not to enforce some set of “RULES” or tell anybody how to do business, but to hopefully bring some perspective to the table so that “ACCOUNTABILITY” begins to factor into the equation. It is my contention that if and when we all start to accept no… TAKE… responsibility and get in front of these kinds of problems that with some good ol’ fashioned “Common Courtesy” communication and a wee bit of ”Just gitt’er done” mentality… everybody will be AMAZED at the increases in productivity and revenue. I hope these posts have shown some light into the corners of what it is we are all doing, and helps (in some small way) to build better RELATIONSHIPS between the many people and businesses it takes to keep this Country Moving.

..Today's Thoughts By Jeff Head 9/17/12 Running Legal Blues
“And help us build a more positive public perception of truck drivers and the trucking industry.” (Xata on Face Book} A quote I borrowed from another site and I am all for what they have in mind. They are handing out a reward to a driver that does great things in the trucking world to help get the word out that some truckers actually care. That we are out here by the thousands trying to run legal and with a little help over the continuous stream of obstacles that the world keeps throwing at us, we actually one day might get there.

I remember when I first started down this path, an idea I picked up off of OOIDA about twenty years ago now I think. But even before that, bits and pieces for me were starting to fall into place as the trucking industry started down a path that led us to today’s world of trucking. More and more drivers were not only wanting, but demanding to run safe and legal. So now in today’s world, our industry is full of drivers that do great things and with this reward I see that finally, just maybe, someone might just be starting to recognize what I have been saying for years. We need to get outside of our world and let the real world know what we are up to, that we are trying to run safe and legal. Part of that is making sure that safe and legal drivers are not only recognized, but also protected so that we can survive this industry and remain out on the highways.

I wrote my book, “Running Legal Blues” to do just this. It was a cool tool that I could step outside of trucking and meet with everyday people and in my own way, let the world get a look into our trucking world and see that we are not the killer truckers that they were led to believe. It was awesome the way that the average person would relate to me and as we sat there in a small room somewhere. Together we became friends and I, as much as them; would walk away with a better understanding of our two worlds. We both I always found had just a little more knowledge and respect for each other and now as that lay person listened or talked to their representatives about trucking issues, they knew that at least one trucker out here was not what they were being led to believe. Letting the world know that safe and legal drives do exist is not only a must, but something that I have been working on for years.

As normal though, obstacles to our destinations do from time to time present themselves. Like the obstacle I found when I decided to come to Face Book with my new book. Many slammed me because as they seen it, I was only here to make money off of the drivers. That after years of advocacy fighting for drivers to be able to run safe and legal without reprisal, my only goal was to, to; well let’s just say that some gave me a less then happy welcome. I guess being new to social media I probably broke more than half of the un-written rules and in doing so I was left out in left field. Such is life.

Not being one though that lets life’s little setbacks get in my way, I simply set out with the same goal in a different direction. I started writing “Today’s Thoughts.” In this way I was still taking the day to day world of trucking and putting out stories that could be used to show the world that truckers do care about such things as highway safety and running legal. Not to pat myself on the back, well, ok; to pat myself on the back, the feedback that I received back from both in and outside of the trucking world sometimes would bring a very happy and proud tear to my eye. Drivers themselves would see that they were not alone in their own personal quest to run safe, but they also would feel that they were now safe in speaking out. Now around the truck stops, drivers were having this conversation when years ago you would get laughed out of the truck stop if you mentioned running a legal log book. One of my stories even ended up in Land Line Magazine a few months ago. Ok. I smiled at that one. Point is, my work makes a difference.

And the responses from those outside of the trucking industry, my work has made a difference in the way that many see us as truckers now. I always love to hear back about how my stories have touched their lives and they feel safer in knowing that truckers that think like I do are out here. That they now understand a little more about the life of a trucker. But the responses I think touch me the most are the ones that come from police officers. I feel that these are the most important ones because we as truckers are as much interested in highway safety as any Law Enforcement Officer is. And when one of them takes time out of their day to send me a quick note, I feel both humbled and honored and I also feel that I have made a very important connection towards two groups that should be working together in highway safety.

So what got me to thinking about all this the other day is a friend after I had mention my book, said that he had never knew that I had written it. I realized that why should he. I was kicked and slammed if I even mentioned it for trying to screw drivers over. And now I see that for the same reason that I was taken out, person after person is now using different tactics to draw attention to different products to do what? To get the truck driver to buy their product, Weird

As for me, the last couple of years I have ordered hundreds of these books, paying for them out of my own pocket, and then giving them away to different people that I thought could use the message within. Some went to drivers that I met out on the road. Others went to people like Anne Ferro and other government officials. But a lot of them went to the average every day person that I would meet in my travels. A waitress at a restaurant or maybe a nice couple I would meet at a rest area somewhere. The point is to give the book to people in high places or just the average person on the street. By doing thisI was letting the world know that safe and legal truck drivers are out here. And if you want us to survive, we could use a little protection from the world. My message was getting out.

So for now on, I am not going to let these people shame me into not talking about my book, it’s message or the next book that I am about to finish up. You can either join me in my efforts to spread our message or not. That is up to you. As for me, my books are priced so that every book I sell pays for one book that I can give away. I will take all the help I can get. Running Legal Blues on Amazon is a good place to find it. Also I have a youtube video, stop by and check it out.
Be safe peeps.

post #4 Sept. 18th 2012 I’d like to continue yesterdays post, but focus on the Manfacturing/Shipping side of the supply chain. First I would like to direct you to http://RoadScholar.com at the bottom of the page you will see a tab leading you to a white paper…”Supply Chain Insanity…Would You Use a Baby Sitter You Found on Craigslist?” If you are a Manufacturer/Shipper, Broker, Dispatcher, Owner Operator… Etc. You “NEED” to read this; and implement this kind of “LOGIC” in your business. As I pointed out yesterday… “Too often in our industry people settle for LESS THAN MEDIOCRE.. and that’s exactly what we ALL are getting.” As a Manufacturer; I would think, that faced with todays “Vicarious Liability” in our already overly ”Litigious Society” you would want to build relationships with “Safe, Dependable Carriers who will give you consistent rates, that are “FAIR and Reasonable” so you are able to know through out the year what exactly freight is going to be, and that it will be handled “PROFFESSIONALY”… and delivered with all the quality and service you put into producing the product. Todays Social Network is making it easier, less expensive and provides for fewer phone calls, and faxes… while affording you the opportunity to track Trucks/Freight and paperwork all with a presence on one or more of the social networking sites. Trucks equipped with GPS, Smart Phones and a laptop can and are becoming Efficient as well as Effective self contained operations. Combine a well equipped and properly trained driver corps with well organized Shipping and Recieving moving goods that are produced with pride and quality… and heck; we might just return this Country and it’s Economy back to where “the Greatest Generation” left it. The most productive “Industrial Nation” the world had ever seen. Tune in tomorrow for pt.3

More services and information will be showing up on the site soon. So stay tuned.

Just Say No to Cheap Freight.

Post #3 Monday Sept. 17th 2012 Cheap Freight… it’s always been out there and it probably always will be. That doesn’t mean you have to haul it. Before 9/11 and the implementation of standardized Fuel Surcharge, rates off the East Coast were at $0.85 per mile. So… if the FSC today is say $0.55 per mile a load “SHOULD” pay no less than $1.40. Yet there are STILL brokers selling freight at $0.85, and even worse… Trucks pulling it. Ladies and Gentlemen, Friends and Neighbors, Children of ALL ages; “WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?” I’ve heard the “REASONING” from the brokers all these years… ”You gotta make your money comin’ in”. Well let’s say you DID get $3.00 a mile goin’ in, if you come out for $0.85 on a 2000 mile turn maybe it looks as though you got $1.925 per mile… but… you didn’t. You have to subtract $0.55 FSC that’s $1,100.00 take that off the $3,850 you got paid and your at $2750.00 which brings you down to $1.375 per mile, not counting tolls, deadhead and idle time. Freinds you may not realize it but you at best broke even… more than likely you LOST money on that round. Brokers are a necessary evil, and there are some good ones out there, but every time a truck hauls this “CHEAP FREIGHT” they are not only hurting themselves AND their customers; But the good broker who is out there trying to get you a reasonable paying load. To top it off you are PAYING these “BAD BROKERS” to keep the rates low. If you haven’t noticed the rise in the cost of living over the past 10 years… Ask your wife, or the company you drive for. I bet you get an eye opening rant. I’m not trying to “REGULATE” the price of freight… I’m just trying to point out that TOO often in our industry people settle for “LESS THAN MEDIOCRE”… and that’s exactly what we ALL are getting. People have told my for decades you “CAN’T CHANGE IT”… my response has always been and always will be… “WATCH ME.” I will make 50 calls, if that’s what it takes to get a decent paying load, or I’ll deadhead farther than I’d like, but…If I’m gonna be forced to… I’d rather lose money making things better than lose money making things worse. That’s just me… So think about it, talk about it, cry about it… But; do something about it; lest you find yourself lookin’ for another ride. JUST SAY NO TO CHEAP FREIGHT.

Sept. 13th 2012 blog #2 Your a Truck Driver… and you are being hunted down for extinction. I’m not an Economist so all I can do is offer up my persepctive on who’s hunting you and perhaps provide some insight as to their strategy. Who’s hunting you is pretty obvious City Police, County Sheriffs, State Highway Patrol, the D.O.T., F.M.C.S.A. and let’s me not fail to mention every four wheeler who merged onto the Interstate at 40 mph at 5:30 pm 20 yards ahead of you and calls your dispatch ’cause “YOU SCARED THE CRAP OUT OF THEM.” Why oh why is it so? Well… the police do have a job to do and just like yours it aint easy, and thank God they go out and do it, and they are under pressure to “Create Revenue” for their respective City, County, State. If they write too many tickets to the “Local Tax Paying Citizens” they hear about it; Believe me… they hear about it. So here comes Joe the Truck Driver from out of state rollin’ through town at 3:30 am with his jake on, did I mention we were in Nebraska where there aint no hills, and Barney the Deputy, gets a call from his wife that some truck driver woke up the baby and she’s not gonna wanna “PLAY” when he gets home. So Deputy Barney is out to get “SOME TRUCK DRIVER $$$” to compensate for his loss of “PLAY TIME”. Now Joe he’s a Proffessional Truck Driver, his log book is “perfect”, his fuel/toll reciepts match-up, all his lights are working, no air leaks, no oil leaks, he’s obeying the local traffic laws… etc.; But… Deputy Barney is out to make his “nut”, so… he notices, or imagines he does, that the brake lines on the trailer have come in contact with each other and writes Joe a ticket. Never happened to you? Hmm… it has to Everybody Else. The Police and Sheriffs are small game hunters, most are respectable and play by the rules, but… as you know… some hunt from the donut shop with “TRAPS” and “SNARES”… this is why you should pay attention to the details, like running your Jake through towns that aren’t on the side of a “Mountain”. A litte thing like that can save you time and money. Now then there are the “Big Game Hunters” they’ll be out lookin’ for a “Trophy Kill”. They want to run you “OUT OF BUSINESS” not just give you a fine. These guys are serious. So they’ve “SOLD” the general public that Trucks are “BAD” and a “MENACE TO HIGHWAY SAFETY” so they won’t let you Idle your truck in 0 degree weather so you don’t “FREEZE” to death whilst you take your 10 hour break, RIGHT NOW because it’s “TIME FOR YOU TO GO TO BED LIL’ FELLER”. And don’t even think about pulling over on a ramp in most states any more… Cause’ they be lookin’ for that now too. So… they decided to “SCORE” you and your company on EVERY LITTLE THING they could come up with… in order to get you out of a job and on the Welfare, ‘Cause apparently the people we sent to Washington believe that if your on the Government dole, instead of paying taxes, Somehow they make more money. Like I said I aint no Economist so… I don’t get it either. The point of the day is this… CSA is here… While we CAN & SHOULD put pressure on our Legislators and Protest it, I don’t think many of us can hold our breath long enough to effect the changes we needed LAST year. So I suggest we look for ways to “WIN THE GAME” if we’re gonna be forced to play it. Some ideas might be to get a Smart Phone, a LapTop and a GPS, Keep yourself and your equipment in as good a shape as you possibly can, and start using “SOCIAL MEDIA” to communicate with each other, Keep the nonsense on the C.B. though. Learn to use the social media outlets to teach and learn… Together we CAN win this game… Because we are the “BACKBONE OF THIS ECONOMY”. Believe that.

09/12/2012

So… as I set down this morning to post my first blog I thought… how appropriate it was that it’s Sept. 12th. On Sept. 11th 2001 I was dispatching in Mt. Vernon, In. at K.J. Bradley, inc. when I got the news about the first tower, and I thought “How pi**ed off that flight controller must have been at that pilot.” When the second plane hit I thought “Thank God there’s a Texan in the White House.” Whenever I see the pictures, or engage in conversation about that day I try to remember how on Sept. 12th we as a Nation got up and got busy “Making things right”. We came together, all of us, we stood united and began the work of helping, rebuilding and HUNTIN’ DOWN. We were in mourning… but we were Americans and we acted like we had some pride and dignity. I can remember sending trucks in there with water and supplies, even drivers who I couldn’t pay enough previously to go into the city, were goin in and doin’ what they could. Ya’ know we all like to say “Thank a truck driver…without them you would be hungry, homeless and naked.” And you know what… that’s right. So let’s start actin’ like WE got some pride, and conduct ourselves and our business with dignity and honor, then you won’t have to “demand” respect… you WILL BE respected. And ya’ know what… that might just make that gouchy ol’ guy on the dock start actin’ a little bit right. And then you’ll start gettin’ out of there quicker, and soon it won’t be so hard to get your trailer loaded the way you need it. Think about it, if some dude shows up at your door in a “wife beater” with his armpit hair hangin’ out, aint bathed in a week, wearing dirty sweat pants and sporting bad breath, and says “Hey how ’bout you let me come in here and show you how to live.” I’m guessing most of us are gonna slam the door before we find out he’s givin’ away free t.v.’s. What I’m tryin’ to say… this aint easy work, and somedays it seem’s like there aint nothin’ but problems, and most days that’s the case, but you can either carry on the way your doin’now… or… you can start actin’ like you CAN make things better. Because the cold hard fact is this… Nobody wants to see a bunch of hungry, naked, homeless people walkin’ around in America. So it’s up to you & me to make it better. Or not. A friend of mine once wrote in a song… “Whatcha’ gonna do now?” Me… I’m gettin’ busy.
