As the ice season for Mackinac Island comes to a close and ferry service returns, we want to take a moment to thank the Mackinac Island community.

Winter is when access matters most—and this year, we were proud to help keep people, projects, and essential services moving when it couldn’t happen any other way.

From early morning flights to last-minute runs, it’s a responsibility we don’t take lightly. We know that when you call us, it’s not just about getting somewhere—it’s about keeping life on the island moving forward. We also want to recognize the crews, businesses, and residents who rely on year-round access. Your trust is what keeps us flying.

As things shift back to the ferry for daily service, we’ll be here—preparing, maintaining, and ready for when we’re needed again.

Thank you for being part of another successful winter flying season.

Just because you can see far doesn’t always mean it’s clear for takeoff! ✈️

Good visibility means you can see distant objects, but low cloud ceilings—the height of the lowest layer of clouds—can still sit close to the ground. This picture is a low ceiling layer over Mackinac Island. To the untrained eye it might look like there is no problem at all.

Low ceilings make it tricky for takeoffs, landings, or cruising-even when things look decent from the ground.

It’s a good reminder that pilots have a lot of things to look at before making the decision to take off—visibility and ceiling both matter when making safe flight decisions. ☁️👀

At a minimum, all flights are on hold for Tuesday morning (AM) while airport crews work to clear runways and ramps.

We will provide updates as soon as we know more. Thank you for your patience and understanding as safety remains our top priority.
