I installed a "Strong" Track manufacturered by Tides Marine on my own boat in 2014. This was largely because the original second-hand mast had a track that was in relatively poor condition and various improved slides including Ronstan roller ones didn't help.
I worked directly with Tides and at the time a fellow working there sold the product with representations of a potential 15-20 year service life based on a "charter cat in Miami with 17 year old track"
In 2016, I replaced the original mast and the 2 y/o track was badly UV crazed and I openly questioned how in 2 years a "proven" 15+ year product could be in such bad condition. That prior asummer was spend in New England also and not Florida UV.
At that time the previous fellow had retired and I worked with Tides on what I was told was a warranty replacement of sorts although they never specifically stated what the warranty period was. This was only after sending them a 1 foot piece of track to examine. They did acknowledge at the time their supplier of materials had changed. There was also an issue of the heads falling off the clevis pins on the slides which was problematic one year in the Bahamas.
So I was already getting pretty suspect of the track earlier this year, but hoped it would get me from Opua to Australia and then I planned to fit a Harken or ZSpar alloy track.
Good news/bad news is that the overlength headboard car pulled out of the track due to a complete failure of the material when sailing with the first reef. I approached Tides with this attempting to email any of the 2 previous contacts from 2016. Both are no longer with the company nor is the original "17 year charter cat" guy.
I was simply told they have a 2 year warranty but normally last 4-6 years and suggested an approximately $1000 replacement plus duty and GST in Australia. At this I sent a very strongly worded email to Tides and several known dealers and sailmakers. I specifically asked if they tell their dealers to tell potential customers it's a 4-6 year 2-4k (insltalled) product? And do they represent it as that at boat shows and advertising?
I got a somewhat bombastic PDF letter from the owner of Tides marine stating their warranty replacement incidence was extremely low (within now 2 years) etc, etc. BUT, he did then offer to send me a replacement track at their expense to Australia.
So, I'm hopeful to get a further 4-6 years from this new track and I suppose if the mainsail is still in decent condition upon returning to Florida, I may purchase a replacement track at that time. If the mainsail fails prior to the track, I feel it'll be only prudent to adopt a new track system at that time.
Moral of the story is, be extremely wary of any rigging component with a large amount of plastic. Whether a backstay insulator, mainsail track or comments of a roller furling drum and attachments.
And check the warranty!
Back in the US late May, currently booking work for remainder of year before returning to my part time extended cruise.
