I walked into the office this morning and saw this. ❤️
Our little guy apparently spent some time here last night lining up all his trucks and tractors along the wall. 🚜
And, for some reason seeing them there this morning just hit me a little different.
Because this is a small business.
Its answering phone calls during dinner, talking about trucks on the drive home, celebrating a great week and figuring out how to survive a terrible one. And sometimes, its our kids growing up playing on the office floor while mom and dad are working.
Its chasing a dream while also carrying the responsibility of knowing that other families depend on the decisions you make.
And lately I’ve wished there was a little more grace for everyone involved in small business.
There seems to be this idea sometimes that when someone owns a business they become the bad guy. That the company has an endless pile of money somewhere. That an unexpected expense doesnt hurt. That someone quitting without notice doesnt affect anything because the company will figure it out.
We usually do figure it out.
But that doesnt mean it doesnt affect real people.
Behind a small business is simply a family working incredibly hard to build something and provide for the people they love.
I think that humanity needs to go both ways.
Because the people who work for us arent just numbers on a payroll either.
I know its become cliche for us to say "we are like a family" and I understand why. Employment is still employment. Our drivers dont owe us their lives because they work here, and owning a business doesnt entitle us to unlimited loyalty.
But I also reject the idea that employers cant genuinely care about their employees.
We know that we cannot succed without the people that show up every day and help us make it work. We want them to make good money. We want them to have time with their families.
We want them to feel appreciated. We want to create opportunities for them. And as our company grows, we want the people helping us to build it to benefit from that success.
We wont always get everything right. We are learning. We are gowing. We are going to make mistakes.
We care about the families represented by every person who works for us.
And maybe the reminder isnt just "support small business"
Maybe it’s simply - remember the people.
Whether you are the owner, the employee, the customer, whoever - give some grace.
Communicate. Keep your word.
Try not to leave someone hanging when you can avoid it.
Remember that you probably dont know everything happening on the other side.
Because they may have logos and bank accounts...
but they are still made up of people.
And sometimes those people are just mom and dad trying to build a dream while their little boys line up their own fleet against the office wall.
