Another season on the water comes to a close. The crews have been hard at work taking down sails, building the winter covers and tarring the rigs. The fleet's all tucked in and ready for winter. Thanks to our crews for all their hard work and to everyone who sailed with us this year! See you in spring!

We’re delighted to share that the Maine Windjammer Association was recently honored with the William Avery Baker Award from Mystic Seaport Museum. The award promotes "the awareness and appreciation of fine examples of one-design classes or boats of like kind" and recognizes “the people and communities who do the bold, arduous, and often expensive work of keeping a fleet of historic vessels actively sailing.” (We can confirm — it’s all three!)

Our mission has always been to maintain these vessels so we can share not only the ships themselves, but the unforgettable experiences they create. It’s a proud moment for everyone who helps keep the Maine’s windjammers alive. Read more about the award and other highlights from an unforgettable sailing season in our latest newsletter.

To earn their keep these historical windjammers have served many purposes over the years. Schooner Ladona was built as a racing yacht in the 20s but was called into service during WWII.

She then was used as a fishing vessel and then educational sail training boat (under the name Nathanial Bowditch).

She was then restored as a Windjammer and later was extensively rebuilt in 2015. Sailing aboard her now is an amazing way to experience the coast of Maine and connect with living history.

Foodie Friday shoutout to all the cooks who turn tiny galleys into 5-star kitchens.

Here’s a taste of what came out of the J.& E. Riggin's galley on a recent day:

👉 breakfast: Made-to-order Eggs Benedict with your choice of crab meat and/or ham atop homemade English muffins. Side of fresh fruit and yogurt.

👉 Lunch: Chili with homemade Newfie rolls, green salad with Jocelyn's blue cheese dressing and ginger shortbread for dessert.

👉 Hors d'oeuvres: Fresh local mussels and oysters on the half shell.

👉 Dinner: Roasted chicken with a ratatouille of homegrown zucchini, freshly baked focaccia and caesar salad.

👉 Dessert: Apple crisp with fresh whip.

Because great sailing deserves great eating!
